Old Jag Lube Chart

Pretty standard for British Industry, I've seen many plant maintenance manuals that do similar.

More recently it's "obscure brand of choice" or equivalent, and finding exact equivalents oft isn't that easy.

Despite a good portion of post merger senior management coming from Exxon/Esso - XOM elected to go with Mobil lubes - and rolled some of the former Exxon/Esso products in the Mobil line. The not so "stellar sellers" faded away ...

Trivia (Brits, please give the mouth breathing Yanks a chance) - what is origin of "Esso" ?

Older cars were cool like that where they specify oil depending on climate and where different types of grease must be used in grease points.

Now it's sealed this, lifetime that, lasts for the life of the vehicle, etc.

What happened when Standard oil was broken up?

So in the modern world if the gaskets and seals were/are in decent shape - just run 15W-40 HDEO and cruise on

Very nice picture of an old lube chart.

How much leaked oil did you have to first mop up to find it ?

Interesting to see Caltex there - was this car destined for the Colonies? I don't think the name was used in the UK, or the US.

So this is a page from the OM for your Capri?
Do you live in the Finnish region of Spain:)?

Intersting.
It would also be interesting to hear what tig thinks of those sloppy looking welds.

That's certainly an interesting piece to see. I don't have the money to play with Jags, but love how much information this plate has on it.

My MG lists every brand of oil known in 1970 on the filler cap, but no weight specs outside the owner's manual.

BTW, do you know what model it is? I ask because those valve clearances seem awfully high.

Well where i live we have a population of 1 Million but 24 Million tourists visit the Island throughout the year so you could say we are almost a colony

My family is Finnish the car was bought there brand new but in 1980 we moved down here

Another interesting thing on the chart-on the MG fora we have a perpetual debate about oil vs. grease in the steering rack. The factory specified EP90 gear oil, and it's what I use along with most other folks. None the less, a fair number of folks insist on grease. It hasn't been helped by the fact that the early steering racks as well as new production racks have a zerk fitting on them.

I guess Jag settled on grease, though.

Interesting history for your family and the car.
I would imagine that the climate in the islands is a bit more pleasant during the winter months than it is in Finland, plus it must be nicer not having Russia as your next door neighbor.

An MGB has a steering rack, which would of course use an oil. More modern arrangements with power assisted rack and pinion steering use ATF or PSF. Grease in a steering rack seems about as appropriate as Greece in the Euro.
A Jag the vintage of this one would have some sort of steering gearbox and these often called for grease.
Two entirely different steering arrangements.
