Just wondering if there is a difference, Havent seen any uoa on the new. Is it the same oil, just in a new bottle? If not are we able to get the old havoline or is it gonna be phased out all together? I've been using the old for a long time and am not sure. this deposit shield seems different.

It just came out a few months ago. Gurus here need to see some used oil analysis before coming to any quality conclusions with it. So really, no one here can answer your new Havoline questions yet.
Why not buy some and do a used oil analysis report here afterwards/mid-late summer?
I looked at the latest spec sheet for Chevron Supreme last night and it appears to have now also changed to the "thinner" formulation.
However if it truly is far less shear prone than the older versions then it's a good thing, but if it's not, then it's a bad thing.

Kinda makes me think of what the owner of the local seafood market said when I asked what the difference was between South African and South American lobster tail.

"Yes this new Havoline w/Deposit Shield will be able to protect your engine as well as a more viscous oil. The new viscosity improver makes it possible to provide the same protection without using that more viscous oil to compensate for the heat. The HT/HS (High Temp/High Shear) for the new oil is basically the same as it was for the former Havoline with a more viscous oil. Yes, Chevron Supreme will be using this same viscosity improver."

Well according to their new specs, I'd have to mix (25%) 5W-20 with (75%) 10W-40 to get me to a heavy 10w30.
But according to them, you don't need a heavy one....
I'm thinking the new Maxlife 10w30 might be the way to go because it's already a medium-heavy 10w30. That would give me a lower viscosity at 40C which is where all the wear is at.

Well i've been using the old Havoline 10w30 in my commercial lawn equipment for years. (Kohler 25hp). Now i'm a little worried about the thinner stuff in a air cooled engine, in the Florida heat. Any advice or opinions? Maybe i should switch. Is there anything that is better for the air cooled engine?
Well I've always used 10W-40 in my lawn equipment; that was after I saw it recommended in a Honda repair manual. I use straight SAE40 in the older engines to breath new life into them.
Use an SJ or SL rated SAE 30W in all lawn equipment. Most rely on splash lubrication so heavy oil is not always a good thing. If your lawn equipment is designed correctly, there should not be a high net load on the engine so running a thinner oil will probably cause no harm.
On the other hand I have an old 1965 Kohler 8HP that drives a hydrostatic transmission and a 38" deck and the govener spends most of its time wide open. I only get about 3 years out of a rod and piston being it operates at 90~100% of its net load.
Many Big Lots Stores have the old Havoline conventional and synthetic oils on sale.
