So I bought this to run in my Sunfire. But this filter looks like it's from the 1970s. I purchased it off eBay. Should I run it or not?

I know those filters well. Amsoil branded them and they all had the bypass valves made from a fine screen like material and most of the Hastings did not. Run it and do a before and after partical count just for fun.The element is a fill of fiber or a kind of plastic that is really amazing.

He's no ex-con, that's the Tough, but Gentle Hastings Man! That filter has to be 25 years old or better, it's been a long time since I've seen that design on one.

Too old to run for my taste. Who knows if the media degraded to the point of failing under use?

Definitely old, Purolator hasn't used the "PER" abbreviation in their part numbers in a long time. And I believe all the new Hastings filters are now white? Been awhile since I actually looked closely at one.

Kinda a neat old filter, I'd rather keep it as a man cave relic than use it personally.

I wonder what the thinking was to buy Hastings, then discard the Hastings features and put it as a second less expensive filter to Baldwin in their line up? The Hastings are almost identical to the Baldwin's except maybe the media is different and thinner can? Not sure, haven't cut open a Hastings, but have a Baldwin, nice filters.

Hastings' cheap one is the Casite-I've ran a couple off Rock Auto-they worked OK, but had some of the thinnest, most fragile media I've seen. I haven't run a regular Hastings since the '80s-I seem to remember them being rare & expensive (more than a Fram EG, anyway).

Hastings filters from the 70's had cotton wadding instead of filter paper.

They were black cases as I recall...Moto was "keeps oil visibly clean"
