Old Gnome In Ubuntu 11-10

i just did a sudo apt-get install gnome-shell. works fine for me.

good article though, I'm running 11.10 under VirualBox, I'm gonna take a snap and then try a few of these things.
 
That is not the old Gnome! That is Gnome 3's "fallback" mode to support hardware that doesn't measure up to Gnome-Shell's whiz-bang graphics. Although it looks somewhat like the Gnome 2.x branch (panels, menus, etc.), there are some serious things missing in terms of functions and configuration.

Debian Squeeze uses Gnome 2.32 and will be supported for the next few years at least. Although it is no longer binary-compatible with it's derivative Ubuntu, all of your info and application configurations from an Ubuntu install ought to work in Debian.
