Old Compact Spares

I did just last week.

Traveling between Houston and San Antonio I had my TPMS light click on while traveling at 80 mph (75 MPH limit), switched to the TPMS section on the dash and saw the front passenger tire pressure dropping. Pulled off and put on the spare, drove 20 miles at 50 MPH to a tire place.

But I agree, I have seen a vehicle with 2 temp spares on it (where the heck did they get the 2nd one?).

Interesting topic, I just got an '04 Sonata for my son and the temp spare is the original. I am debating getting a steel rim and a full size spare, would probably be cheaper than just an actual temp spare replacement.
I mean I saw a girl’s driver rear pop on the freeway and kept going (over a large bridge in Philly but there was a shoulder) for a couple miles on the wheel after all the rubber flew off. People do crazy dangerous things sometimes. We couldn’t believe what we were seeing haha

I have told both my wife and daughter to not stop on the freeway, shoulder or no shoulder, just drive to the next exit and find a parking lot.
I would rather pay for a new rim than risk them getting hit.

I suppose that’s fair. Was crazy to watch at least

Looks to me like the people on this thread who have had/seen trouble with old compact spares are more likely from the Southern US,
those from cooler climes not so much.
Use my 2007 Honda Accord as an example - that tire will be at least 14 years old.
In Canada I'd keep using it for a few more years.
The compact spare in my 1988 Accord looked okay when I sold it at 20 y.o.

My 2015 Genesis’ spare lost it’s tread last year, despite having never been used. Still held air though. It was fine 6 months before and when I went to check the air I found this.
If that tire failed that quickly just sitting in the spare tire well, it would have disintegrated like a vampire in the sunlight had you actually ran it on the car.

Recently I saw an idiot on the interstate driving a Nissan Altima with the spare donut on the front of the car driving about 85mph and the donut was flat.

Ha, my 2010 Genesis Coupe spare same thing. Never mounted.

I recently crushed a Corolla with the original 1995 compact spare, still looks and drove fine with when it was needed. I think the common consensus is Hyundai has horrible compact spares but they spent the money on a compact alloy wheel.

Maybe you Hyundai owners should look for a Toyota compact in the junkyard and out the Kumo compact?
