Ok To Use a Filter With a Higher Bypass Setting?

I just purchased a case of Mann Hummel 719/12 which was designated as a high quality replacement (by an online fluid wholesaler) for the Wix 51516 that I am running on my 4Runner and Nitro. I just realized that the bypass setting for the Wix is 8-11 and the Mann is 16. Is this a problem? I do not know what the EaO34 Amsoil filter's bypass is at. I do run these as well. If the Mann works out, that would be one [censored] of a filter.
 
Probably not enough higher to be a problem, in my opinion.
And I think the PureOne oversize 51516 match is about 16. But I wouldn't go higher.
 
But will the higher rating affect anything in a negative fashion? If it will adversely affect the performance of my car, I would shy away from these and cancel the order......
 
The only thing that I would possibly be concerned about is if/when the filter goes into bypass, the oil pressure out to the engine would be a few PSI lower than the WIX.
The German filters tend to run higher bypass pressure settings to prevent frequent bypass valve openings because the German cars tend to use thicker oil and run their filters and oil in longer oil change intervals.
16 PSI is actually the lowest German setting I've seen. They often run 30 PSI bypasses.
Still, different filters brands that cross reference to each other as recommended substitutes vary in bypass settings.
WIX may be set at 8-11 PSI, Purolator may be set to 12-15 PSI, etc. for the the same equivalent filter.
If you won't sleep at night, then cancel the order. In my opinion, it will be fine.
 
Some suggest filters seldom go into bypass. A higher bypass would mean less flow, but filtered oil. A higher quality filter should have higher flow and develop less psid.
 
Would it be of any benefit to continue running Redline in this app? Maybe the thick 30wt would cause the higher bypass/flow to cancel out and run optimally in that it creates more oil pressure? No idea here....

They don't list them anymore on the master reference. I would speculate that it falls in the 8-11 range since it's probably produced/assembled by WIX. This is a (mostly) generic filter (FL400S/51516/etc) with no distinctions that I can see.

I don't see 16 being out of bounds. As was said, this is just a tick above what Purolator carries as generic. For most filters, if the spec calls for a given specific setting, the aftermarket carries that number. There are some holes ..like the Subbie turbo filter ..but they are the exception.

I'd have no issue using a slightly higher bypass setting that fell just outside the range of what I would get generically from various aftermarket suppliers.

Your bypass activity will be primarily dictated by how long and how much you're in relief. The more flow you divert in relief, the more PSID the filter will see. This will mostly occur at cold start and up to the point that the entire pump output fits through the engine. Loading will alter this somewhat in the duration of these elevated PSID events.
 
If the filter going into bypass or not is dependant on 3 things: 1) Oil viscosity, 2) Oil volume and 3) Filter media's flow resistance.

It doesn't matter if the oil pump is in relief or not, because anytime the oil pump is in pressure relief the oil volume at that instant in time will be maximum seen by the filter/engine.

Obviously, when the oil is cold and viscous, the resistance to flow will be greater and the pump will go into pressure relief much easier. The volume of oil going through the filter will also be less (and more will be spit back to the sump) when the oil is cold, but the viscosity factor will cause a relatively large PSID to develop across the filter media.

It's entirely possible to have the filter go into bypass without the oil pump at max pressure if the flow rate and viscosity is large.

The manufacture may bump the bypass setting up accordingly on the filter if the media is high efficiency and adds a few psi of PSID. Purolator PureONEs usually have a higher bypass setting than others on filters specified for the same exact vehicle.
 
Is then there a correlation to be surmised when saying that the Mann filters are solidly constructed (high efficiency) therefore the higher bypass is necessary/acceptable?

If the Mann filter is specifically for your vehicle and has a higher bypass setting, then yes, I'd say that's true.

The same goes for Purolator filters ... they typically have higher bypass settings than a different filter (say WIX/NAPA Gold) for the same car. Most likely due to a little more flow restriction and filtering efficiency. Plus, it says the filter media can withstand a higher PSID before having to go into bypass mode.
 
Mann are good filters. I don't have a clue as to their filtration efficiency, but it it probably quite sufficient.
The Mann built VW filter I have says to change it at least every 30,000 km or two years, So I'd say that in this case the higher bypass setting is primarily due to the intended filter loading/life more than a "finer" media.

The filter is cross referenced to an oversize wix 51516. The Toyota is the 51348 I do believe. I am running the oversize filter for my application. The Mann 719/12 is the filter that is cross referenced to the oversize that I am using and according to the filtration site (and a confirm from an app guy there) everything should be ok.
