I have full-size spares on both my rides -- mounted under rear bed/hatch. One of them is mounted with the valve stem down -- so one can easily check/adjust PSI. I picked up a nail in my Sport Trac, so I swapped it's spare on last night. It was mounted underneath -- facing up, so you can't get to the valve stem. It only had 21# of air. When I put the spare back in place, is it OK to mount it with the valve facing down (towards ground)? I never go off road. The chances of it being damaged is slim. It's a pain to have to remove the spare -- just to check the air.

If they are mounted down people might actually check the pressure in them.
A lot of folks wouldn't bother to drop the spare to check it if the stems were mounted up... they would know that J.L. would check the spare pressure as part of the oil change service.

My Dakota didn't come that way but I checked the spare under my Dad's Ranger in the fall and noticed that's how he left it.

4 years after he's gone and the guy's still helping me out....

Both of my trucks had the stem facing up. I removed them, checked the pressure, and reinstalled them with the stem facing down so I wouldn't have to remove them again.

It must be a "Ford" thing. I will do the same tonight.

Somewhat off topic, but my spare must have a TPMS sensor? I've been driving around all day with the spare on, and the light hasn't come on. I didn't think the spare tires had them. +

Great dads do that!!!

Shouldn't be a problem. My friend's Pathfinder also keeps the full size spare under the rear hatch. Valve stem down is the way it came from the factory. It's held in place by a flange at the end of a retractable chain, and won't secure if put stem up due to the wheel offset.

Thanks. I flipped it a week (or so) ago. I can now check the pressure regularly -- w/o having to remove/lower the spare.

Some people advise to keep the stem up to prevent road debris knocking it off.

I like it pointing down so that I can check it regularly.
