The car is a 2001 VW Golf GTI with the 1.8T motor. I took the plastic engine cover off to find two hoses were destroyed. The other one is not in the pictures, but it is another hose that connects just below this one. I have ordered replacements, but in the meantime is the car safe to drive with the hose removed? Will I cause any harm?

I believe it is the upper PCV valve hose. I have taken it off and I feel air being pushed out through the outlet on the engine where the hose connects. Doesn't it mostly affect emissions?

Should I drive it without the hose?

A friends GTI did the same thing. We wrapped it well with electrical tape and it was fine - no CELs at least...

Thats funny I just replaced the lower pcv hose on my girlfriends' jetta today. Its part of the pcv system. I would wrap it until the hoses get there. Chances are if the upper one is that bad the lower one is too. Follow the one that goes downward and check it out. I replaced hers with this one.
