All the oils ive used in my car.. Supertech, Supertech Semi Syn, Supertech SYn, Shell Conventional, Castrol Synthetic, Mobil 1 all proved to be good oils for my car. My next choice of oil will be 50% Valvoline Conv. and 50% Valvoline Maxlife Synthetic. I want a oil that will quiet my valvetrain because of Hyundai's crappy Lifter noise. I've heard that some oils work for making them quieter.. which oils made your valves quieter?

Syntec 5W-50 and Mobil 1 5W-40 make the valve train in my Audi 2.8 V6 whisper quiet. Mobil 1 0W-40 makes it sound like a rattle trap at hot idle.

I just put Mobil 1 0w40 in my VW GTI 1.8T this past weekend. It's been 12k miles since I've used this oil; I've been running GC for the last 12k.

I'm going to keep a close ear on things, just to see if my VW makes the odd noises other have reported while running Mobil 1 0w40. I never paid any attention to the sound of the engine before. To be honest, it has always been very quiet, even when I ran SuperTech 5w30 conventional & a Fram EG filter.

Someone awhile ago said Valvoline Durablend 10w30 helped quiet their valvetrain noise. VSOT also helps quiet things down.

Never had an issue with valvetrain noise, but after switching to Havoline conventional, things seem to be quieter under the hood of my F-150 (this goes for both 10w30 and 5W-20).

Hyundai's don't have lifters (OHC). You may need a rocker arm adjustment, though.
You can run a thicker oil to quiet things down a bit, but if adjustments are needed, then no oil is going to help.

wavinwayne, I'm not aware of any 1.8T owner reporting noise issues with Mobil 1 0W-40 in the 1.8T. The 2.8 V6 is very different engine, a fossil, really.

IIRC, "slickfisher" said it also makes his 1.8T sound like a rattletrap. A lot of the folks on the vwvortex also loathe Mobil 1 0w40. But, then again, those 'texers are a different breed.

Carquest 5w-20 and havoline 5w-20 made my 2002 isuzu rodeo 3.2L quiet as a church mouse. The direct acting valvetrain on these is normally pretty clickedy-clickedy. I will admitt though, I chickened out & went back to 5w30 for fear of excessive cam/bucket wear. Isuzu doent spec anything under 5w30
