quiet, quiet oil

2005 Corolla. 267,000 miles. Bought new, always used 5w30, primarily vanilla M1 through 180k, then mainly Pennzoil Platinum High Mileage. Today was the first OCI with Valvoline Full Synthetic with Maxlife. Have never believed in "quieter" oils, at least not within the same viscosity. I certainly wasn't expecting it to sound different. Only bought a few jugs of this Valvoline because they were so cheap on sale.
I'm not crazy, this oil made this engine significantly quieter at idle. (Using same filter as I have for at least the last 5 OCI's)

It's possible it wasn't the oil, but I've run two consecutive changes of both and M1 and Schaeffer's Full Synthetic in my Cruze and it certainly wasn't any smoother than with its predominant diet of Synpower.

It was likely the oil

Good oil, but next time try Magnatec

Ha, well, I've got three more OCI's of this on the shelf to get through first, but we do rack up miles quickly.

Ive found PU and M1 to be the most quiet. Any major repairs done on your corolla til now?

None. It has been ridiculously reliable. O2 sensor under warranty, other than that nothing other than struts, battery, brakes, belt...normal wear items, no repairs. No leaks. Uses only one/half qt oil per 7-8k OCI...most people wouldn't even notice the consumption. Not glamorous, but really remarkable reliability!

I am strictly speaking of all oils being 5W30.

I have used Mobil 1 5W30 on several occasions and it always made any engine I used it in, more audible. Not noisy per say but, I could hear things that I DIDN'T hear before from other oils. Sure you get used to the sound over the whole OCI.

However, I have used oils( Quaker State Conventional, DEFY & MaxLife comes to mind) that quieted down the engines a noticeable amount, even over other so called "quiet(er)" oils.

That's a good way to put it...less/more audible. It's not as though I hear knocking with other oils...they just sounded like a normal Corolla...unpleasant sewing machine? However, with the VFSwML, if I start the car with the A/C fan on, I have to look at the dash lights to see if it's running or I need to turn the key again.

Yep, I know whatcha mean!

I noticed something similar on my Altima. The first two oil changes I used Penz. Plat. 5W30. On my last oil change I used Mobil 1 0W30 and I noticed more engine noise almost right away. It is only when the car is idling that I notice the extra noise. I have a bunch of Valvoline Synpower 5W30 that I will be using for the next 2 years. We will see how that goes.

I've always noticed more engine noise when using Mobil 1 and is one of the few reasons I quit using it.

I'd probably try MaxLife.

Looking into a replacement car for the son. He been driving the ol 98 Camry and it's never let us down once. Been on Quaker State Conventional for years. But it's only got 137k. So looking at Camry's and some Corolla's. Then will just give the Camry to one of the grand daughters. It's clean, nice shape, no leaks, never add oil during OC duration, never risen on the temp gauge, just normal wear items too. Gonna hate to see it go but at least it will stay in the family.
