By my estimation of the facts presented ...he should be able to take off the cap and have nothing happen with the engine running.

Pull the cap off and see if you are getting any flow from the place the cap is mounted. YOu seem confident that nothing you installed is causing the problem, so see if that is the problem.

The cap is there to keep the oil filter in place since it's a Ford 6.0L diesel engine.

For the purposes of this conversation and thread, the only thing I've installed is the oil filter cap with it's Oilguard-installed fitting. It's a direct replacement for the OEM oil filter cap; the only difference (besides color and material) is the fitting on top.

Given that the fitting is a male AN -4 fitting, I've put the OEM filter cap back on until I get word from Oilguard on what to do. No way am I putting the engine are risk by running it without a functioning oil filter system, which is what you suggest I do.

I am surprised since it appears to be the first time it's happened since no one here or at TDS know what to make of it.

Thanks,

Al

Albin, I am quite sure it is not the oilguard cap or anything to do with it. It must be the stock system failed and you need to have it looked at by a diesel tech. Sorry to hear about the trouble, but if you look at things on the brite side...you found the problem quickly and shut it down. Being a 2006 it is still under warranty so have the Ford dealer trouble shoot it.

Yep, that's right.

Cap fitting is clear, you can see light through it, I can blow through (oil tastes yucky) and I get full air flow. There is no, NO obstruction in the fitting.

Do you have to use a full flow?
Can you temporarily try NO full flow filter, just fancy cap cover, to see if problem goes away?

If the 6.0 full flow BOTG-member fool proof? could it be accidently installed upside down?

I want to see the video of the filter cap line disconnected, engine running, and no oil shooting out of the cap. I bet oilguard will get a kick out of it too and slap some MFG employee around a little. Could the purty cap be so short that it is squeezing the filter creating a seal?

Someone on TDS had the same problem, turned out to be the filter he was using.

Pics of the filter's I'm using vs. the OEM version are here:

Note the difference between the tops of the two filters.

E-mail sent of oil filter cap and oil filters to Oilguard this morning.

Anybody care to bet that I get a recommendation to buy another kind of oil filter? Anybody want 3 brand new Napa Gold 7314 oil filters???? I ordered 6 when I ordered the truck, which, BTW, was just before I ordered the Oilguard oil filter and filler caps.

Al

ETA: The truck runs fine, BTW. Nothing wrong with the OEM oil system.

Must be aliens. Only possible explanation. Or possibly Poltergeist. Probably Aliens from the planet StrokeD-62. I'll bet it is part of their pre-invasion activities where they test the ability to diable all diesel-powered machinery prior to a massive push to crush our armies.

But I'm still confused. Or was that Gary that was confused. Well, I'm sure we're both confused...

Ok, talked to Oilguard, it's what was suspected: You have to use Oilguard's or OEM (I assume this means Motorcraft) filters.

Here's a pic of the Oilguard filters, note that the Racor filters are similiar. Compare to the Napa Gold 7314 filter that are shown in my pics in the link above. http://www.oilguard.com/Merchant4/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=mtm&Category_Code=racor1

I asked why they didn't mention this in their documentation or install directions. He coudn't give me an answer.

Thanks for all help, suggestions and comments.

Al

So, essentially, their filter has a hole in the normally "closed" end that allows oil into the cap area. Effectively the cap/O-ring seal makes the cap void of oil flow.

Can't you just poke a hole in the regular filter on the end cap?

Your original flow must have tapered off with the oil getting warm and swelling something to re-establish the normal seal.

I'm surprised that no other OilGuard users didn't encounter this and chime in

Maybe they all ordered OG filters

No, actually the filters I have to use on the Oilguard oil filter cap have to be the "flattop" filter, i.e. the used one in my pic above or as shown on the OG site. The pic you posted of the Wix/Napa Gold type filter CANNOT be used.

Followup: Got a call from a very nice and informative guy at OG. We discussed the issue and he recommended I get a Motorcraft or one of their filters. Since I needed a filter pretty much now for a +5K mile trip, I opted for a Motorcraft FL2716 filter from O'Reilly's for abut $21.

He did mention a way to use my 3 Napa Gold filters but the math works out like this for me: $48K truck with $10K engine and $100 oil filter cap vs. about $40 worth of filters. No thanks, I'll give them to another 6.0L user.

After asking pointedly why none of this was mentioned on his web site or install instructions, he said it was for legal reasons to prevent major filter manufacturers from suing him. Fair enough, I guess.

2nd follow-up: Installed the Motorcraft filter and got pressure and flow. I'm back in the land of the milk and honey, life is good, the beer is cold, fried chicken is almost ready. Now, if I could only get someone to finish installing my 25 gallon aux fuel tank into my Toy 4Runner....

Thanks,

Al

Apparently the other filter offerings (aka WIX) "seal" against the cap and prevent oil from migrating to the cap dome area.

Yep, according to OG, this is true.

According to my truck, it's true too.

I see what's wrong!! There's a battery sitting too close to the flower bed in the picture and the toxic fumes caused the weed (flower) in the center to up chuck and die.

Yea, but don't tell my wife, I've been trying to kill that dang thing for months! Both are now gone!

Thanks,

Al
