Oil Weight question

Car is a 2006 Hyundai Tucson 2.0L I4 with 79.000KM, Summer weather reaches +25/30C winter goes down to -25C

Here is what the manual says:
"For good fuel economy SAE 5W-20(5w30) ILSAC GF-3 oil is preferred regardless of regional option and engine variation.If SAE 5W-20, ILSAC GF-3 engine oil is not available, secondary recommendation engine oil for corresponding temperature range can be used." Chart Shows 10w30. down to -18C.

Whats the difference between 5W-20 and 5W30 and what secondary oil would be equivalent?

I am looking mainly for the best MPG, right now its running on 5w30 P.U. and feels great, just wondering if 5W-20 would be better...thanks

You might squeeze a tad more fuel economy from a 5w-20 or 0w-20. Whether you'd notice it is another story.

I suspect that the key is not the viscosity grade, but the ILSAC certification. Anything rated GF-3 or GF-4 will be optimized to some extent for fuel economy.

If I were in your position, I'd run Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0w-20 -- not just for fuel economy, but because it looks like a pretty serious product overall.

Really, it's an experiment to be honest. If you're already running PU, it doesn't really get much better than that. 0w-20 or 5w-20 MIGHT get you a little something extra. I'd look at the air filter, ignition system related stuff and changing other fluids over to synthetic at this point to squeeze out better mileage. Along with tire pressure. Regarding oil, I really don't think it gets much better than what you're already using.

I do not think Mobil 1 0W-20 is available in Canada yet...

as the other member said, you cannot do much better than PU, I would stick to any top of the line 5W-20 synthetic oil available via local retailers. 2.0 is a Turbo engine, 5w30 will be a safer choice especially if you plan on extending your oil change interval than the recommended interval by your mfg...

We live just a few miles from the Florida line and run 5W20 synthetic oil year around in our present Two Hyundai vehicles. Same went for the last Two we owned.

I would use 0W20 here but for some unforeseen reason it is not widely available here.

We see long hot Summers and do see some freezing conditions in Winter but not often.

The 5W-20 will drastically improve your fuel mileage and give your engine the added horsepower you need to get your Hyundai through those 5 second 1/4 miles.

So 5W-20 is thinner than 5w30 ? is that what i am getting ? car is in mint shape mechanically wise, nothing else to replace on it at this point, and no, its not a turbo engine.

There is plenty of 5W-20 available at my local stores, but does not sound like its worth my while, plus im a little reluctant to get away from the good old trust worthy 5w30 that i have been using in all my previous cars and this one.

Before she ran on Syntec 5w30 for 8000KM on whatever filter the place put on it, now i use PU With OEM filter, planning to go 10-12000KM.

Yes.

The W number is just a cold pumpability rating for winter temps. The big number is what counts most.

Got it! since i dont time my oil changes by time of year or every 6 months and just go by the mileage, would a thinner 5W-20 oil be worse for me in one season or another?

Strictly speaking, it's impossible to say for sure without investing some money. However, if your owner's manual says you can use 5w-20 year-round, then you should be fine with a good 5w-20 or 0w-20.

I would run the oem spec 5-20. It's cold up there!!
