97 Toy Avalon 146,000 miles, began using oil about 1Q/1000 miles, at about 143,000, used maybe half Q/3000 miles previously. PCV is pretty new and valve cover gaskets don't leak. I guess its starting to show its age.

You could have a stuck piston ring... I would get some ARX and try that and see if it doesn't clean up the problem. Follow the direction to get the best results.

You could also pull all the spark-plugs and have a look to see if it's just 1 cylinder burning excessive oil or equal amongst them all.

Could also have a pin-hole leak in the oil filter. Have you done a change recently or is a change required soon?

You could also run a dry/wet compression check and see what the readings are and then report back.

Does it smoke and when ? How was the engine maintained ?how does it run ? If it rubs good for the price of the Auto R/X it is worth a try.

Dry/wet compression does not tell you if your oil control ring is stuck or not, but more like whether your compression rings and the cylinder walls mating conditions.

Just give AutoRx a try and see if that helps and if it does, good for you. If it doesn't it maybe something else (e.g. valve stem seals?)

im betting on valve stem seals myself. How do u check compression by the way, I mean the engine pulls like a freight train still, but just curious.

He would have had to drop the valve-seals into the engine to be causing this kind of consumption so quickly... It's gotta be a stuck ring... Or maybe, and I forgot to mention it above... How about a PCV Valve that isn't functioning anymore?

You pick up a compression tester at an auto parts store.

I would also perform a leak-down test.

PCV was changed only a few months ago, I don't see blue smoke however, neither on start-up or while driving, so I wonder if it is burning, or there is a leak. I'll investigate it when the weather warms up I guess.

I suggested a compression test because it gives you something to go by especially since your oil use jumped up so fast. If you were leaking you would probably see oil somewhere on the street or under the car.

You say you changed the PCV valve a few months ago. I had a simliar problem a few years back after changing my PCV valve. I used a Fram PCV valve and started using oil, something this van never did. I went and got a Motorcraft PCV valve and the oil use stopped. Did you use an OEM PCV valve? Just a thought especially if there are no leaks. Cheap and easy fix too.

Try a new OEM PCV valve. It seems a few of us are leaning that way. For me it was night and day when I put the Ford part back in my Van.

par - That's a "sludge producing" engine I think, (I have one too) so get on it right away. The PCV from Toyota is a good thing, and so is the hose. They cave in from the inside and look great on the outside.
Do you run synthetic? Maybe take a peek under a valve cover if the PCV doesn't solve the problem.
