He sent me some general info (better aromatic resistance, but I'm not sure if it was the brand, viscosity or both that it was linked to) that I don't claim to fully understand so I don't want to misquote and put words in his mouth.

I'm a looser and take the Mazda to the dealership for oil changes.

I'm not sure a CAI will really make that much difference. The mixture is adjusted based on the available air when at sea level or in Colorado which is probably more of a difference that the CAI will yield. The standard loss at the drag strip in Colorado can be up to a full second for street cars and I'd bet CAI won't gain nearly that much.

I also know that Camaro owners would install fuel pressure regulators on the LS1 to lean them out at the drag strip but found they couldn't leave it leaned out or the computer would simply adjust and essentially reset everything back to the stock "ideal" happy place taking their power gain away over time.

how will you lean the mixture? Are you planning to hack into the ecu? Anything that is done before the MAF sensor will be compensated for by the ECU.

Eddie, you are correct. The ECU will "see" the MAF readings and adjust for what Mazda engines believe will be the correct mixture settings. The engine will run the same air fuel rations whether in Cripple Creek or in Death Valley.

Cold air intake can, if designed correctly, decrease the temperature of the incoming air, and thereby increase it's density. This, however, is compensated for instantaneously (within one crank revolution) by the ECU, so there is no change in the air fuel ratio seen in the combustion chamber.

MAF sensors require that the airflow across the sensor is laminar and undisturbed. A poorly designed CAI can cause turbulent flow, which can totally fubar the MAF readings and make engine A/F management really bad.
