Ok...I've been looking at (dash) observing, logging, and recording oil temps somewhat obsessively for my Sportwagen since buying new 6 years ago. I have noted a slight highway speed increase in them since switching to HPL a few years ago. My question for the fine folks of BITOG is....is this possibly related to higher HTHS with the HPL Euro 5W40 I use vs. other popular Euro 5W40s? Discuss.

Very likely, slightly more film thickness with hpl 5w-40 which claims 4.0 hths whereas all the other off the shelf 40 grade euro's are around 3.5-3.7. I believe some were 3.8 before but with reformulations using less pao they dropped a touch nowadays. The 3.6 of hpl euro 5w-30 is sufficient in protecting so you could use that next time.

Yes. More resistance.

Why not HPL 5W30?

Has there been any MPG decrease? I went the other way with the Corolla in my sig, to 5W20 from 5W30, resulted in best ever highway MPG (42).

this will be the one i will give it a go on winter when my next OCI. i have to order it from Finland and with post and package it will cost me a boutique oil, around 100 euros!

ther you go! the kid is telling you something.make peace with your past 😂 .what a nightmare for you!

seriously now ,what is with you and LM ???. i had the same bad impression about LM as you did, but they made steps ahead.they have all the best approvals on their oils ,good specs in some of them, some of them have the same with some reputable oils like mobil i quoted in another topic but you still dont like them.
has that to do with your business back then in europe? didt they pay you, they hustled you or something? they treat you bad or something? this is not the ''just dont like them, its a menance against them.why is it so bad that''made in germany''? they are proud germans just like some US products advertise it theirs too.if they are telling the truth about made i germany and have all the best approvals you have to acknowledge they are a god company just like any other.
in oil synthesis they made progress, at least their specs are good in par with big names.

They have all the approvals, no doubt.
I was being sarcastic here. But, there are better oils for money and definitely for same money.
That being said, if I did not have a choice, sure, I would use it.

all of them? ok, how about that top tec 4200 new gen 5-30 i mentioned a day ago.has the same specs with mobil 1 5-30.why did you mention that M1 is far more better?

you always tell us that first thing is approvals, then specs.this oil has all the best approvals like M1 and same specs .unless there is something else i am missing. yes M1 esp 5-30 is there for around ages compared to that new gen,the old one 4200 i accept was worst, but as you stated the new M1 is not that good like the old visom one.so why these 2 oils are not comparable?
i am not being agro ,just interested to learn , you must know something more .

Approvals are a minimum requirement. I trust Mobil1 to use better stocks, polymers, etc., than LM.
Again, Castrol Edge 0W30 and Castrol Edge 5W30 have same approvals. But they are absolutely different oils.
And I did not say all of them. I said there are definitely oils that are better for less money or same money.
However, the European market is different. Here you get Mobil1 ESP 0W30 for $27 for 5 quarts (4.78ltr).

but these 2 castrol you mentioned are different grades ,meaning different base stocks ,additives, vii e.tc...
the 2 i mentioned come from the same category-grade,so its easier to compare their synthesis as beeing that.

there are always exceptions, of course.

about market, sure,it is.Mobil1 ESP 5W30 costs the same money with LM 4200 new gen in europe.but M1 5-30 api SP is still hard to find.LM is everywhere.
but what if LM made a progress and uses the same base stocks or similar?at least at some oils like this one? how are we going to know that?
VOA? UOA? bcs, on paper it seems as good as M1.you always check the psecs to tell us if there is a good analogy between kv100 and pour point minus.so they both have the same analogy but the rest you mention how can we learn?

On paper a lot of things look same or similar. I guess you come to the point where you make educated guess.
I will always trust Mobil1, Shell, Castrol (though they are IMO least trustful of big ones) over LM. Listen, everyone is trying to make a buck. LM is doing what they think it is necessary to make money, which is over the top marketing. Approvals are there so you don;t think whether oil is suitable and good. But here, we like to talk those differences. Give me same performance on paper between M1 and LM, I will always go Mobil1, regardless the price.

if aggressive marketing is the cause of your dislike against LM then you shouldn't buy shell gas, iphones,Cola e.t.c. they are not good arguments for someone like you.you accepted HPL or REDLINE that they are respectable even if they dont carry approvals but then LM who carries approvals ,and good specs on paper you still dont accept them as a big one.and for someone who tries many brands thats strange.
well your educated guess says dont try LM bcs of the aggressive marketing? thats not a very scientific reason for us who are learning things, you know that.a scientific guess is to tell us what are their differences and to talk about them as you say.i am all ears my friend.and if you convince me that this LM is worst compared to M1 i will spend my money to import ESP 5-30 regardless i can find LM 4200 new gen right out of my door the next day. :)
