Recently installed an oil temp gauge on the car and this morning was the first chance to drive and see what temps it runs.

Conditions were 67f, BP of 28.06 and ATM of 13.92, light rain and a little windy.
Commute is 48.65 miles.

At the 7 mile mark the temp was at 165f and at the 15 mile mark it was at 186f.
Temps then ran 185-192f, but 192 was max and it seemed to like the 185-188 range. (Basically running in the heavy 30/light 40 grade)

Car has a full belly pan and a full upper grill block.

Recently changed the oil also from Pennzoil conventional10w30 to PU7.5x25 (50/50 5w20 and 10w30). Mileage was 3 mpg lower than normal for my commute and I am blaming the rain/wind. Will see if it improves and if not will go back to Pennzoil conventional.

I'm sure you already know there is no 7.5w-25, but rather you have a heavy 20wt or a light 30wt.
Rain and wind has a big effect on mpg. I doubt you will notice that big of a difference overall, maybe a little bit at start up and to full operating temp.

A) you oil is too COLD, it really needs to get up to 212 Min and prefered to be 220 at cruise; and basically anything under 250dF is "just fine" for the oil to live a nice long engine protecting life.

B) many engines with oil coolers run oil thermostats to prevent the oil cooler from over cooling the oil under light useage conditions.

C) many other cars connect the oil to the water radiator so that the oil will warm faster and not get as hot as without any oil radiator and without a real oil cooler (heat exchanger).
 
Oil temps are fine. Seems a little lower than normal, but I'd be happy.
The standard reference is measured at oil pan temperatures, not a galley or at a pressure fitting..

Where is your oil temp sensor?
 
Sensor is in the pan. I was always worried about the xw20 since my first OUA showed a good amount of shear, from 8.5-7.1 in 2k miles, but that was whatever the dealer put in.

Even that amount of viscosity loss (16%) would still not likely get the oil condemned by the manufacturer. They all allow 15-18% before the spec' oil grade is considered unserviceable and should be changed.
Anyway, your oil temp's are so low that you could experience at least 25% viscosity loss and still have more than sufficient operational viscosity.
 
One more thing...

We are not 100% sure that the sender and gauge are NASA certified.
They may have a net reading that is off a bit.
What you want is a consistent gauge , so you can see a big jump [I hope you don't!].

How did you install the temp sensor?

I want to do the same on my 2009 Sonata 2.4L but drilling into the oilpan looks risky. The oilpump assembly fill most of the oilpan.
 
I don't know about the certification, but so far it and the identical unit on my bike, the car's outside gauge, my Ultragauge AIT, ambient and coolant, ALL agree.
If one is wrong they all are.... Time to break out the Kestrel....
 
I would say its totally fine, although i don't have oil temp stats from my car i always access the hidden menu where i can see the actual coolant temp and it's most of the time around 85C - 95C and when i'm at a constant speed (Around 50 - 60 km/H) for a couple minutes it stabilizes at 100C - 102C but 80% of the time it's around the 80s and low 90s.

BTW if you wonder what car i'm talking about its a BMW N52K engine. (3.0L 6 Cylinder)

The sensor is installed in the drain plug which in most vehicles is mounted horizontally in the sump. No drilling into the oil pan required.
