Oil Temp Measurement - Honda Rider

I checked the oil temperature of my 1985 Honda HT-R 3009 (technically 3013 since it has the 13hp (390cc) engine rather than the 270cc one).

Used a Fluke pyrometer probe that I have for measuring molten plastic temps.

Ambient air temp outside: 90F
Oil temp when cold (sitting in garage): 86F
Hot oil temp: 215F

Oil is Honda GN4 SJ 10W-40. Mowed average grass height for about 1 hour.

215F seems like a very comfortable temperature. This is likely the hottest the oil ever gets.

Forgot to mention, I measured the oil by sticking the probe down into the sump through the dipstick hole. Gave it about 30 seconds to come to equilibrium.

where did you find api SJ oil?

Some old Honda motorcycle oil someone gave me. I think the GN4 is still SJ rated.
