Owner of 2001 Sport Trac 4.0 Sohc with 95K miles. Bought new in 2001 and I have had minor chain rattle since new. I'm currently using Castrol GTX 5W30 which seems to have a weaker additive package than some of the other oils. I will be taking a trip from South Florida to Norcross GA this spring. Any suggestions on a good oil to use for that engine? It will be about 1400 miles round trip.

Any API SN 5w30 is appropriate. Quaker State defy 5w30 is a good API SL rated oil with boosted ZDDP. If you want to stick with SN oils Pennzoil conventional in good.
If you venture into synthetics I really like Mobil 1 High Mileage 5w30, it's also an API SL oil but higher up on the food chain than defy.

I'd say Pennzoil 5w30 conventional since it helped quiet down my Jeep, or Valvoline MaxLife 5w30. I used MaxLife 5w30 in a friend's 2001 Ford Ranger 4.0 and he sold it with 200k miles and running strong.

Nothing weak about GTX's add pack. UOA/VOA can't reveal all of an oil's additives. I use GTX 10W30 in my gf's 4.0 Mustang. Car loves that oil! Runs crazy smooth on it! Much better than the Valvoline conventional,Synpower,and M1 I've tried in it (all in 10W30).

This engine could not care less what oil it gets. It's ridiculously easy on oil. When I was running 5k intervals on my 4.0 SOHC, the oil on the dipstick was still honey-colored when I changed it. Now I'm going 7,500 (or longer if it hits 7,500 in winter). That's still being really conservative.
Amsoil Signature Series w/ Liqui Moly and an Amsoil Bypass filter.
