They have a sale at the Cdn. Walmart
stores on Valvoline Synpower 5w30/10w30
for only $19.00 for a 5 litre jug. Thats
a great value at $3.80/litre. This oil
has a ACEA A1/B1 rating. What do these
ratings mean? Mobil 1 has a ACEA A5/B5.
Some others have a A3/B3 rating.

It says in your car's manual what oils specs are required. ACEA specs have been developed by European car makers. For example, my Audi needs an A3 rated oil.

Full ACEA specs are:

* A1 Fuel Economy Petrol
* A2 Standard performance level
* A3 High performance and / or extended drain
* B1 Fuel Economy diesel
* B2 Standard performance level
* B3 High performance and / or extended drain
* B4 For direct injection passenger car diesel engines
* E1 Non-turbo charged light duty diesel
* E2 Standard performance level
* E3 High performance extended drain
* E4 Higher performance and longer extended drain
* E5 (1999) High performance / long drain plus American/API performances. - This is ACEAs first attempt at a global spec.

Gasoline Sequences

A1 Oil intended for use in gasoline engines specifically designed to be capable of using low friction, low viscosity oils with a High Temperature / High Shear Rate Viscosity of 2.6 to 3.5 mPa.s. These oils may be unsuitable for use in some engines. Consult owner manual or handbook if in doubt.

A2 General purpose oil intended for use in most gasoline engines with normal drain intervals, although it may not be suitable for some high performance engines.

A3 Stable, stay-in-grade oil intended for use in high performance gasoline engines and / or for extended drain intervals where specified by the engine manufacturer, and / or for year-round use of low viscosity oils, and/or for severe operating conditions as defined by the engine manufacturer.

A4 Reserved for future use for gasoline direct injection engines.

A5 Stable, stay-in-grade oil intended for use at extended drain intervals in high performance gasoline engines designed to be capable of using low friction, low viscosity oils with a HT/HS of 2.9 to 3.5 mPa.s. These oils may be unsuitable for use in some engines. Consult owner manual or handbook if in doubt.

Thanks guys for the information.
Even if the Valvoline is older stock,
it's still a API SL oil at a great price.
Thats half the price of Mobil 1 per litre.

Yes, but as is M-1 5-30/10-30 (both A1)unsuitable and not recommended for your BMW.
