Hi, Excuse this question as I am a newbie. I have a 2010 Honda Civic that is running perfectly. It is at 40,000 km and I have done synthetic oil changes (various brands) since the factory fill. I do oil and filter changes every 7,000 km.

I decided to see how the overhead cam looked and removed the oil filler cap. Upon putting the cap back on, I looked underneath and noticed what looks like tan-colored sludge on the inside of the cap. It is a fairly thin coating ... maybe 1 mm or so. I never looked at this previously so I do not know if there was a coating all along.

Is this a bad sign or am I worrying about nothing. Thanks in advance for any replies and apologies for a newbie question.

Regards,
Peter

Probably just from condensation.

Dont be too concerned with it , its oil emulsification and relatively harmless.

Your balmy winnipeg weather does this, nothing to worry about, my cars get the same thing in the winter months, if the car is not driven for extended distance's to burn off the condensation.

IMO if you've been performing synthetic OCI's its just residue and once you've cleaned it off that will be obvious and go away.

Has nothing to do with oil type plain and simple condensation and his cold weather.

Thanks cat843! That was my biggest worry! Do you have any advice on adding strengthening brackets to my motor? I would cry if it fell out. I am going to Home Depot to get some metal angle brackets to stop the fall. Any advice on how to mount them? Thanks

For sure. If Winnipeg (and Regina) were actually experiencing an April that didn't have February temperatures, it would have already burned off.

+1; a 25 minute drive on the highway once a week should take care of that.
