Within the next 6 months I want to replace the crankshaft oil seal on my 37 year old 3HP Campbell Hausfeld air compressor.

Looking online, I see a large variety of oil seal tools.

This is a small crankshaft oil seal, about 5/8" ID.

I am looking for specific tool recommendations that will get the job done without scratching the crankshaft snout.

(P.S. I am amazed I was able to find the oil seal online from multiple sources for my ancient compressor. )

For most lip seals on shafts

Easiest way is to get the old slide hammer dent puller with the hardened screw.

Get a sharp punch and pop a hole in it

Screw it in

Pop it out

30 second operation ( once the flywheel is off)

I usually use a small sheetrock screw, twist it into the metal part of the seal and pull the seal out. I've managed to remove some very small seals without damaging the bore or shaft. I've also made a small "puller" from a little screwdriver, basically put a notch in the side of the blade so I could slide it between the shaft and lip, twist so the notch grabs the seal and pull the seal out. Works on seals that have a tight bore or not enough room to get a screw in there.
