You bring up a good point. During the 1980s, carb engines had many unreliable smog devices attached to them.
There is another problem that some cars have. The car gets built with the smallest battery that the manufacturer can get away with, and if the battery is in less than perfect condition, the car will not start.
Anyway, I only encounter a few oil related failures:
1. Not changing oil on schedule.
2. OEMs making the schedule too long. The Toyota 1MZ-FE engine is the first one I can think of.
3. Not using full synthetic in a car that requires it. Many people weren't aware that their VW Passat 1.8T needed synthetic, and they died from engine sludge.
