I will need to perform an oil change on our 05 malibu v6 in the coming week. It just rolled 100k and I am wondering what you guys might recommend for oil. I have been using FoMoCo synthetic blend, 5w30. The vehicle sits outside and sees cold temps(nebraska weather)and hot too. But I am looking for a winter oil now. It uses a bit of oil currently but I am not exactly sure why, it is a minimal amount though. Car gets driven fairly hard and LOTS of city but it is also our highway vehicle.
Cliffs: 100k 05 Malibu v6, cold temps, driven hard.
Recommendations?

You are using a very good oil already and a grade that is reccomonded by chevy. I would continue to use the same stuff your using. In fact i want to try the exact same oil in my truck and get a couple uoa's to compare my mobil semi syn with. Look in the uoa section and compare some numbers, that oil seems to be a great choice for all around quality and results. If you are still concerened about cold get a block heater and throw it on a timer for 2hrs before you go to work, or leave it on all the time like me. I have a 400w block heater and a 200w oil pan heater. its nice having heat as soon as your engine starts and the bennefits of having luke warm oil in the winter should be huge.

I love doing this

by the way.

Ford semi-syn 5W30 is a very good oil.

You might think about Castrol GTX 5W30 for months below 45F & GTX 10W30 for the warmer months. The 10W30 will burn off less than the 5W30. Castrol can be had in the 10 quart eco box at Wallmart and there is currently a $7 rebate on the website. Protection does have a price point. Don't over spend and check for sales as any name brand these days are good.

Not a good choice as it's thicker than any 5w30 synthetic at all temp's that the OP will encounter.

I'd stick with what your using or any synthetic 5w30 you can find on sale. Mobil 1 AFE 0w30 is also an option.

And welcome to BITOG!

Long time lurker so I figured I should register. Good to hear such positives about the current oil. It is nice being able to use the same oil in both vehicles!

Id say keep with the syn blend Motorcraft. You could also see if you can get Kendall GT1 syn blend. Its made by the same company, and I know around here its a bit cheaper since you have to top it off now and again.

You could also try mobil 1 High Mileage 5w30. It is blended a little thicker and may slow down some of the oil burning and will clean out the engine of any gunk.

If you are burning oil it may be time for a PCV valve change if it has not been done already. That is cheap possible fix.

I see nothing wrong with Syntec 0W30. I would buy it over Mobil 1 0W30 in a heart beat. Check UOA's on those two and you will find the Syntec has much better wear numbers. With the engine burning oil thicker is better.

If you are having success with MC 5w30, and it makes things 'easier', just keep using it - it is a great oil.
