Hey guys, i have a 240sx S14 with a RB25DET on it and i use Synthetic Mobil1 15w50 because when i bought the car a year ago i called lots of performance shops and most of them recommended mobil1 15w50, and i have some friends that use that too.
I want to know if it's good or bad for my motor and why people use this thick oil when most on ppl here in bitog use thin oil like 5w30..

My motor has around 50k miles.

I live in Massachusets near boston.

Warm up time between 7 to 10 minutes.

I drive the car on weekends only, in the city i drive real easy like 3k rpm max. and i redline it on the highways(7k Rpm), not all the time.. And i drift sometimes too..

On winter time i just turn the car on for 10 minutes once a week, and rarely i drive it when i see that the roads is not wet or doesn't have salt on it.

The car does not have any problems, its modded pushing 450whp.

Thanks for the patience.

Starting the car just to let it idle is a waste of fuel, dillutes the oil in the sump with fuel that doesn't get burned off,and will accumulate condensation, again that doesn't burn off. And considering that start up is the primary source of wear you aren't doing yourself any favours by doing that.
If you aren't going to drive the car don't start it. I'll bet the oil in the sump is fuel diluted and thinned considerably.
Now as far as oil choice go what is the manufacturers recommendation. If you can I'd lean towards mobil 1 0w-40(even though I hate mobil 1). It's the best oil they make and has more certs for more manufacturers than any other oil on the planet.
German castrol would be another oil high on my list for that car.
Please don't start it anymore without driving it. That is so bad for the engine. The oil doesn't get up to temp so the engine doesn't get a chance to boil off the fuel that inevitably gets by the rings when they are still loose inside the cylinders.
Oil protects best when it's up to operating temp,so wear is higher as the oil gets warmed up.
As far as oil goes I'd look into German castrol or mobil 1 0w-40 no matter how much it pains me to say it.
Enjoy that great car.
And stop needlessly starting it.

Good post Clevy!

NEVER just start a stored car unless you can drive it for 20-30 minutes minimum. Otherwise you can actually make things worse.

And M1 0w-40 is pretty much at the top of my list, especially on sale.

Hey Clevy thanks for the reply! i didn't know that!
So what the ideal interval times to turn on the car?
Let say ill not drive the car for 5 months straight, i should turn it on only once a month?

about the 0w40 oil its not going to damage my motor when im drifting redlining it? high rev for long period of time?

Thanks again!

I suspect you would find oil consumption increasing if you run something like a 0w40 or similar.

The Engine is fitted to lots of the rwd Skylines in the UK, all have come from Japan.

One of the more established Skyline Specialist prefers 15w50 aswell.

I know the S14 is quite common in the US, probably more so than in the UK or Europe but how common is that engine in that car, the only ones I have seen in the UK have been converted, usually for Drifting.

A really solid engine and that capacity is very underrated as everybody instantly thinks about the bigger RB26 lump.

I wouldn't use anything other than what you have in there or similar if you are using if for drifting.

And certainly don't consider 5w30.

There some good bits of info on www.gtr.co.uk

Skylines wether they are GTR or GTS have been getting imported into the UK in decent numbers for over 10 yrs.

And most of the specialists have strong links with Japanese Tuners, who really know these engines.

thanks guys.
So i think that this engine is different from the others engines and i should keep the same 15w50 for drift in the summer?

My supercharged Marauder basically sits for all of January through March, sometimes longer, and I never start it at all as I won't drive it when there's salt on the roads. When I take it out for the first time in the spring, I hold the pedal to the floor (disables the fuel injection) and crank it for 10 seconds a couple of times then I let it actually start. I've been doing this for the last 8 years without issue.

I can't say this is the ideal answer in your specific case, but I do agree with Clevy that periodically starting an engine without a load or the chance to get to operating temp is not the best answer.

thanks overloard for clarify, i thought if i don't start the car for too long it will damage but it the opposite.. So ill let it sit ultil the spring comes then.

Exactly. Run it only when you want to drive it. If you're worried about the battery, use a maintainer and you're set. If you're worried about the fuel, use Stabil or something similar.

My F-150 has been sitting for months without running, and that happens regularly. I keep the maintenance charger on it all the time and it never has any problems.

thanks garak, ill do that, just bought the stabil thing for the fuel..

so i guess ill keep the 15w50 as the engine is different and its better for high rev drifting.

Have a look at Silkolene Pro R 15w50 or Motul 300V 15w50

They are two of the best and I think PAO based aswell.

Though I think the Silkolene might now be called Fuchs Titan Race Pro R now.

^^^Fuchs Titan products are all but IMPOSSIBLE to get over here stateside.

Believe me, I've TRIED!!

i know about motul and when i bought the car i heard about the sikolene, they said is very good oil. But both are too expensive, only ppl that compete in tournaments use them.. =[
