Hello everyone, new to the forum and hoping to get some recommendations on Oil and Filter.

2010 Honda Accord 4 cylinder (K24Z3) with around 62k miles

Manual recommends 5w-20 with the API Certification Seal

Live in Columbus Georgia so not dealing with really cold temperatures.

Almost all driving is short trips (live in city), however I will be using highway system around town so still some faster driving. Nothing ridiculous, but I do drive a bit aggressively.

No current known issues.

The vehicle is driven around 6k miles a year, and I prefer to change the oil every 6 months. My wife and I recently had a baby which has changed some of our schedules. I am at the 1 year mark and need to get the oil changed soon. I have been using Royal Purple 5W-20 full synthetic with a Fram Filter. Based off what I have read in the forum it appears that there may be better (or at least less expensive and just as good) options. I would like to continue using a 5W-20 Full Synthetic and I don't mind buying local (Advance Auto, O'Reillys, AutoZone, PepBoys, NAPA) or ordering online.

Please let me know if you need anymore information and I look forward to the discussion. Thanks! - Charlie

Use a brand name premium synthetic (whichever is on sale) (e.g . Pennzoil Platinum, Castrol Edge, etc) and your engine won’t skip a beat. Check the PCV valve if it hasn’t been replaced yet and/or you notice oil consumption. You have a nice engine there.

Running any major brand of 5w20 will serve you well. I would consider changing the oil annually based on your mileage.

Some people will run from any suggestion of Walmart , but you can go on line and they will list a wide variety of synthetic oil .

Also check the adds for the major parts stores , O'Reilly , Advance , AutoZone . We have recently had a Pep Boys come to our little city . Need to start checking with them .

I also order filters from RockAuto.com . Otherwise at Walmart .

Do not forget NAPA . Bought 24 quarts of their synthetic on sale last year .

I change oil on a pretty short OCI . Cheap insurance , and not too costly doing it at home .

I have 2 GM cars that do not require DEXOS specified oil . Bought 5 quart jugs of Shell brand conventional oil on sale at Home Depot , of all places , last year .

I'd just go to Walmart and buy whatever synthetic oil you want. I personally like to run a 30 weight in my Accord, but that's just me.

Mobil 1, Pennzoil, etc. etc. etc. can all be had for about $25 for a 5 quart jug. Buy a Fram Ultra Filter ($9) and you're all set. You can even change the oil filter every other oil change.

At 6k miles a year, use any name brand 5w20 (conventional or synthetic or blend) and change it once a year. Any jobber oil filter will work too but you can also upgrade that if you want, again no need to change it every 6 months

Did anyone suggest and decent syn or semi-syn 5w20?
We have the K-24 in a 2006 TSX with 180K miles.
Mobil1 all the way. High Mileage now...
I never check the oil, just service it by the maintenance minder around the 20%, depending.
All good.

I really appreciate all of the replys so far.

In response to just changing once a year... My daily commute is less than 10 miles. Do you think this would be a reason to change more often?

My Accord's situation is similar to yours -- short commute, city driving, occasional highway runs, etc. I use syn 5w20 (Pennzoil, M1, whatever Walmart has) and extended drain filters (Fram Ultra, M1), and change the oil every 9-10 mnths/6500-7000 miles. I run the filter for 2 OCIs. Maybe I could keep the oil in for a full year but we have cold winters here and I want fresh oil going into the snowy season.

I don’t see a problem there.

Follow regular and routine maintenance intervals for the vehicle use a quality 5w20 synthetic oil and filter's. You'll be good to go - Honda's are fabulous cars.

When the op reads all this mess it will be interesting on what he decides to use
in the end. Everybody has their secret sauce.

I don’t think you’ll find “better” than your RP 5W20,if you’re happy with it I’d just keep on using it. My personal favorite in my Accord is Quaker State Ultimate Durability 0W20

Quaker State Ultimate Durability 5w-20 is $19 for a 5qt. jug at my neighborhood Meijer, before any rabates. Any decent filter will last a year and 6K miles, and your commute is not short-tripping. If you like Royal Purple's marketing, keep buying it; otherwise, you've got a baby to feed, diaper, and educate, so, while the car needs to be treated well, it doesn't need boutique pampering, if RP really even amounts to that.

I would do it twice a year. My Mom only drives 1000 miles a year but 2-8 mile trips. I change at twice a year but only do filter once a year.

That would eliminate 50% of the activity here at this site if people did that !
