I liked it better, and was wondering what everyone's opinion was. I change the filter (Purolator Premium) every 5k, and the oil every 10k. I live in the DC area, so 5w30 is what i usually stick to.

I would maybe change filters. Up it to a Pure One or maybe even a Mobil 1 Extended Performance. 10K seems to be the norm for OCI on synthetics these days, so if you like the Valvoline better, I'd say you've got a good system in place.

Why do you like the Valv better?
There is no right answer per se.
Have a used oil analysis done & see if your regimen is getting you through.
DC area is usually what I call: 50/50 city/hwy within a construction environment.
Note, the RX330 shared the same engine as the Toyota Sienna in the late '90s and possibly 2000 and 2001 - these engines were known for being hard on oil. Be careful if you fall in these years.
Thx for the comments. The RX is '05. I noticed that with valvoline, the engine seemed to run smoother than with Mobil. No official tests though. As for the filter, I've been using PureOne up to now, but reading some blogs, it seems that the filter might/may reduce oil flow, so thinking about switching to Premium Plus with this upcoming oil change.
Note that M1 and Amsoil are both saying to let their respective filters go the distant (15k/1yr OCIs for M1 and 25k/1yr OCIs for Amsoil). PureOne is considered comparable. Given the waranties they're stating, these filters apparently are not getting loaded. So 5k may be getting rid of a good filter.
Side issue - just curious, what kind've oil consumption are you seeing with your RX? I've read that many Toyota engines have relatively high consumption basically built into the engine design. My '98 Sienna goes thru a qt in under 2k miles. Thus my curiosity. (??) (If you have very little consumption and are doing 10k OCIs, then a filter chg at 5k might be a good thing to replenish the TBN, etc).

Going to use Motul 300V 5w30 in my 330 at the next oil change in 1,000km time.
I was using Mobil 1 5W30 (up until 74,000 miles), but after I got an analysis, it was recommended for me to switch to Pennzoil Platinum 5W30 (I got some Buy 1 Get 1 Free at Advance Auto). So far, so good. I am using Mobil 1 Extended Performance filters, but will probably change over to the new Amsoil EaO filter next change. Also, the next oil change, I will get another analysis to see how the Pennzoil is doing.

Losiho and Curtis, what are your consumptions rates? And have you noticed a difference since going to Penz. I've been on M1 since buying the van 75k miles ago - have had this consumption rate the whole time.

Not a drop in 6,000-7,000 mile oil changes with either Mobil 1 or PP. Perhaps it is just me imagining things, but the engine seems more quiet on PP.

Oil consumption in mine has been zero. I purchased it with a Lexus Assured Warranty with 42,000Km, it now has 49,000Km and due for an oil change at 50,000Km.
It's currently filled with whatever oil the Lexus service department use, which I believe is Caltex 5 or 10w30 mineral oil.

I would leave the filter alone. In spite of the research we have seen from some oil filter manufactures I prefer flow over ultimate filtering capcity. I think that any synthetic oil you choose will likely do well if the OCI is proper for the duty cycle this vechiles see's. With out any UOA information though it is tough to say much more then that. I prefer 10W30 synthetics in any engine Toyota makes over 5W30's but again we need some UOA on this engine to really see exactly what it likes.
JohnBrowning, being myself the owner of a Sienna, and planning to make my next van a Sienna (hopefully when this one hits 250k faithful miles) - any info you could give (or pt to a thread) on 10w30 over 5w30 in Toyotas would be greatly appreciated.
I use Mobil 1 10w30 in my 2005 Kluger (mechanically the same as RX330) and have done since new, now has 57000 kms with no problems at all or any oil consumption. Have 15 litres Mobil left in my stash which I shall finish in the Kluger then make the decision to stay with Mobil or go with Castrol Edge 5w30 which I use in my Corolla. OCI at 10k kms as per handbook with Toyota filters.

I'm similar with Curtis. No oil consumption. I do add 1/2 qt to 3/4 qt during 5k mid-term (between full oil change) filter change because i do lose some oil during the filter change. To minimize the loss, I try to do it early morning when oil is cooled and I raise the front. Also helps with removing the d*mned plastic covers.
I too have noticed quieter engine and smoother acceleration from using the valvoline plat. But again, nothing scientific analysis. I got in a habit of changing the filter at 5k because i felt the engine being worked little hard around this point when using Mobil, but I might try going the distance with the valvoline. Cost isn't really an issue for me, but time is. So if I could minimize the 5k filter change, it would be def. worth it.

Just type in Toyota in the search field in UOA section. THe conventional 10w30 oils always hold their viscosity better. They too shear down in most Toyota engines but not as bad as the 5W30's do.Even the extremely mild on oil 4.7 V8 will freqlently shear 5w30 conventional down to a 5W20.
I have the same engine as you in a '06 ES330 and I have tried Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30, Redline 5w20, Castrol GTX 5w30 and Pennzoil 5w30 and 5w20. The engine seems to like the Pennzoil 5w30 conventional the best. I have a used oil analysis coming with ~4000 miles so we'll see how the feelings about this oil translate onto real world analysis.
