I'll kick it off with RTS 5W-40

5-30 or 5-40, maybe 15-40.
Depends on how hot you get her when running.
Something would have to be wrong or loose if the 5-30 did not work .

Since the 1975 many GMs call for 5w30 and 7500-mile OCI. Some allow, some require, some warn against the 40 weight. Brand selection is an opportunity of fine tuning for hydraulic lifter noise (if any) or carbon build-up scheme. I'd start with one of the US Valvoline's with below 1% sulphated ash level (for those older low rev. engines tend to suffer from the carbon build-up somewhat earlier). Or else, I'd go with synthetic Mobils from the begining and forget about both cleanliness problem and flat tappet lifters.

What year is the engine and does it have roller lifters or flat tappet? Initial start up is critical for flat tappet cams. Use a lot assembly lube and be sure you have enough ZDDP in the oil you use.

Been there, done that.

Ralph.

It's in a 82 TA but not raced or driven hard.

I had the short block replaced last year from a after market engine builder. so i don't know the block year but it is old style because my heads and intake bolted back on.
What brand of oil would be best, I know the zinc levels are all low nowadays.
who has the most in a 5w30 that i can buy off the shelf ?

Some ZINC info,

So I should go with a high zinc count like the shell truck gaurd ?
or close like the Exxon Superflo Supreme or Shell Super 2000 ,valvoline turbo.

in the 10w30 .

I would use a 5w40 in the summer and a 5w30 in the winter if you drive enough miles to change it that often. If not then use a 5w40 year round.

How much zinc is in the delo 10w30 ?

I would use a 5w30/40 but i think i need more zinc for the flat tappet lifters .

maybe i shouldn't care but there is so much talk about older engine designs needing the zinc and it's not a problem with newer engines with roller lifters.
so whats us guys with older engines to do .
