I just bought an old Starcraft boat with an Evinrude 40 hp outboard. This is my first boat and I have little experience with outboard engines. Its an old 2 stroke twin cylinder.
What are some opinions of a good oil to use.
For now I mixed up some Quicksilver oil and premium gas, manual recommends 50:1 ratio.

Quicksilver is a good oil and Evinrude also makes a good oil. Most any 2-cycle oil with a NMMA rating of TCW-3 will work fine in your application.

Likely all the modern TCW-3 oils are light years better than the oil sold when your motor was new.

Buy any major brand.... with the TCW-3 rating on it... without worry.

The above advice is good. I use Penzoil semi synthetic. It's available at Advance Auto for 10 bucks a gallon around here.

Any TCW-3 rated oil will work fine. Fine tune brand based on Smoke levels and convenience. Our old Johnsons are pretty smoky on Quicksilver at 50:1. A local source of Valvoline TCW-3 oils has been good for us.

The secret to having fun with a boat is to maintain it like it is an aircraft. New waterpump ,filters keeping the tune fresh the battery tested and charged and fresh check the trailer bearings and if needed install bearing buddies ,keep everything lubed up bla bla bla. That way when you go to the lake the boat will start and run and not breakdown on the lake and ruin your precious day out .

My wife's cousing has a small aluminum boat, and it has a real small, real old 2-cylinder 2-stroke on it. I forget the make, but the date on it is like 1964! Still runs good!

My son has been refurbishing an Evenrude Lark V 40HP from about that same era. The oild now are far better than back in the day when those were new. TCW-3 is the way to go. We are using the originally recommended 40:1 mix, but it is way smokey and maybe we should change to 50:1.
