went to the local wal-mart to see if they had some tires for the kids car. While i was there i saw that st was down to $8 for 5 quarts ,but none in stock . I asked the manager when they were getting some in and he said that he did not know because it had been recalled , the actual recall was not for this region(midwest) ,but it was all being recalled anyway.
Sounds kind of fishy. To me it just sounds like another excuse for me to not use st oil or anything made by wpp. What do you think? Have you ever heard of another oil recall?

I am not saying ST is bad but whats the point when you can spend 2 more dollars and get a Valvoline or other national brand.

Now thier filters are a different story. I'll use those ^_^

I was at wally world yesterday and the ST oil was still in stock I was "tempted" by the dark side to use thier gear oil, but didnt.

I always avoided those oils and stuck to brand name. I took a chance on their type F ATF to flush and refill a PS unit, I hope it wasn't a mistake.

I have some too but that does not change the fact that it often comes up light in the loafers and in the past some damage has been done.I will not put the stuff in my car only the wifes. It was priced as $3.36 a quart so the Synthetic was too good a deal to pass on. I consider it at best really good dino oil not a real synthetic. I think my Dad put some in Mom's car due to price alone. Maybe I can get him to do a UOA on it.

If it was going in my car i would add 1-2 onces of additive to bring the ZDDP and other anti-wear metals up so even if Walmart's blender forgot to add them in I would.LOL

No way would I spend thousands on a car and try to save two bucks with products that, on more than one occasion, are much lower in quality than mainstream competitors.

I agree. I don't understand trying to save a few bucks especially in the
U.S. where oil is so cheap. In another post on here some guy wants to use
this cheap junk oil in a new Cadillac CTS.

I've been running the ST oil in friends car for some time now, and it has not had any problems, runs fine. I know that we all look at VOA's and UOA, and pick oil by impressive numbers, but there are so many people out there who neglect vehicles, don't change the oil when they should, is cheap products, and so on and their cars are still on the road. I guess the question is how bad does an oil have to be to cause engine damage or excessive wear? And really, what is considered excessive?

I guess that I used to be all about premium oils, heck, I spend high $ on Amsoil for everything I own from my lawnmower, weed eater, power washer, boat, car, truck, and other car. I believe they are superior products, but I am also one of those people who likes to get "better or the best" stuff. It is one of the reasons why I don't have as much money as I should lol Good enough for someone else does not mean good enough to me.

Anyway, it would be pretty difficult for someone to convince me that any modern oil that is sold to the public would cause excessive wear, or be "bad" for an engine, or cause failure. Even the poorest quality oil on the shelf today is light years ahead of oil for years ago.

+1 I am with you on that for sure.

Just because it is a recall does not mean that the product was defective. It could have had something left off the printing on the bottle. Products are recalled all the time for misprints.

Still better than a FRAM.

My understanding is that it was more of an issue of how California tests than anything else. Rather than fight it, Wal-Mart just pulled the stock and shipped it out of state.

Coastal about ten years ago had a mis-labeled batch of 5W-30 that was actually 10W-30 and North Carolina made them recall it.

In both cases, it was not bad oil.

I don't remember seeing any weak ones. Or are you refusing to accept progress in the form of the Ecore non woven end caps? What's it been, 5 years and no documented failures?

I noticed at the Wal-Mart here that all the different brands of oil in the store say "manufactured for wal-mart" or something like that on all the bottles.

I agree, and I have nothing against the felt end caps but the media seemed really thin. If it was my vehicle I would spend a little more and get a purolator.
