Harley, I think you're overthinking this man, it's just oil! Use whatever your manual states and be happy

I know plenty of people who use 5w20 here in Phoenix with ZERO oil related issues. My brother used 5w20/5w30 in his F150 sold it with 200K. Another brother of mine has an '07 F150, all 55K miles so far on 5w20. Truck runs really well.

WHICH operating temperature? The coolant in the heads?...yes. The coolant leaving the radiator headed to the bottom of the cylinder water jacket?...no. The oil in the oil pan surrounded by ambient air?...no. The oil elsewhere in the engine?...depends on how hard the engine is worked.

Bottom line just use what your car calls for no matter where you live. Period.

I know some manuals will get extremely "picky" and spec multiple weight oils, depending on the "outside temperature" of where you will be driving "during" that fill of oil....

Then others, state plainly on the oil filler cap, which oil weight to use, K.I.S.S.

I love it; makes it so much easier.

Granted, the oil filler cap-noted weight should be OK for year round usage, or I don't think they would list it on the cap in the first place

Most vehicles should do fine with a 5W-20 or 30 oil....though I do know some Mitsubishi's are "picky" and will call for a 10w30 or 10W-40 even....


My rule of thumb, is go with the lightest weight oil possible spec'd in the manual for better flow-ability and protection

Also.. Work is going very well. I need to get a hold of A car, or MY car, next year. or i am going to go insane and start drinking Oil and trying to dive in to my engine to see the Oil spewing around inside.

I hope it does not get that bad. I need a car to mess with. All messed up, missing parts.. Gimme. Ill replace em.

5W-40 and 10W-40 Group IIIs sound like good oils. 5W-50 and 0w50 seem not necessary. Unless i get a Ford GT, 2007-2010. Then im following Spec'd oil.

And yeah, those Manufacturer charts ARE confusing!! They say 20w50 over 50 degrees, then 10W-40 goes down to like "10 degrees" then 10w30 AND 5w30 go from -32 (on 5w30 LOL or so) to "86 degrees" ??? and 10w30 is from -10 to "95" (?)

Every Honda i ever had that takes 5w30 i always wondered if i should go UP a grade in 105-degree July heat. 10w30 was always the answer. As 5w30 in a Honda CRX.. maybe even then 5w30 is fine. I am not brave enough for xW-20.

If you had a Honda CRX would you put 5w30 in it? And skip 10w30? A bigger V6 like a 3800 or even a 3.1, maybe 10w30 is better.

If it specs 5W-20... Use 5W-20. I tried 5W-20 in my cavalier that specced 5w30 and it seemed to work fine for a while... Then there was noise. Then the oil pump died. Whether or not the oil pump was related, we'll never know..

And I'm pretty confident that Ford4life and crownvic4life are two different members.
