Oil leak - filter not tight enough

That's a good theory! I always do oil changes when the engine is warm, so as it cools, and the gasket contracts, it becomes looser then when I tighten it.

Who knows; the seam could have failed as well. I looked at it for a while, but even cleaned off, there was still oil around the seam, so it was hard to tell if there was a crack or a leak.

I had the same thing happen late last year on my mom's Malibu. I always make sure I put them on tight, with oil on the gasket, but I do oil changes when the car is hot, so the expansion/contraction from the drastic changes in the weather may have had something to do with it. For what it's worth, the oil filter was a Napa ProSelect 1040. I've used them a few times on that car with no problems, but this one did start to leak after a couple of weeks. I just went under the car and re-tightened it and it was fine for the full 5k OCI.

An overtightened filter is as big an issue as under tight. When it is over torqued the gasket can't perform as designed and deal with all of the temp. changes, vibrations and pressure cycles the filter experiences in service. Follow the directions on the filter.

Well, it wasn't the filter. It's an oil leak somewhere near/above the filter. Arghhhhhhhhhhhhh

Both this car and my Dad's Blazer leak like a WWII radial engine.

Dex-cool + GM intake gaskets = leaks
