I bought a 99 Mustang,4.6,V-8. I have no idea what oil has been used in it. 71,000 miles on it, seems to be well maintained. The owners manual calls for Motorcraft 5 w 30 Super Premium Motor Oil. Ford Specification WSS-M2C153-G.I am thinking of using MC but when I checked at Wal-Mart and Advance Auto all of their MC is synthic blend. I assume that this is a different oil than what the book calls for.Am I correct or not.I am still thinking of using MC if it would be the right choice. If not what can I use. I don't really want to go full synthitic. I usually change oil at 4000 miles. In my old 93 F-150 I have always used the old Havoline 10w40. So changing brands and going to a 5w30 is all new to me. Thanks for your input.

If i recall, ford back spec`d the motor oil for that engine to 5w-20, Ive been using the motor craft 5w-20 syn blend in the 5gal jugs from walmart for like 10.50, its great oil at a great price compared to others. I drive an 03 stang w/ the 3.8. and it being a syn blend is a good thing. thats just my

I run Syntec 5W-20 in my 1996 4.6L GT engine, but pitch in a quart of 30weight to help control oil consumtion. I have tried many oils and weights, and the 5W-20's are definitely the best in the engine. You will be surprised how much quicker the engine is with 5W-20 compared to 5w30.

For synthetic blends you might try the MC 5W-20, and the Syntec Blend 5W-20. I recommend a full-synthetic at 5000mile OCI's if you drive like me. My engine runs like new with well beyond 200,000 miles on it.

Give the Motorcraft 5W-20 a try. I bet you will be pleased. My 97 Crown Vic has been back-spec'd from 5w30 to the 5W-20. So i use it and I can't complain one bit. Somewhere on here there's a gentleman who's CV 4.6 is still very healthy at 200K+ doing OCs with the MC blended 5W-20.

I've only been around BITOG for about 2 months, but one of the first things I learned was how highly thought of the Motorcraft synblends are. They test well and are cheap to purchase. That's a pretty tough combination to beat.

lawman, have no fear. Motorcraft 5W-20 is a superb oil and will do very well in your Mustang. I use it in my '99 Taurus, my sister's '96 Taurus, and my niece's '99 Contour. If my Marauder was stock, I'd be using it there, too.

If you're concerned about 5W-20 being "too thin" (which it's not), then Motorcraft 5w30 is also an excellent oil. You can use either one in your car with no worries. Both are available at Walmart, as is the highly-regarded Motorcraft FL820S filter.

*EDIT* Oils have improved a lot since your car was made, so don't be concerned about using an oil that's not strictly "by the book". The test MC 5W-20 has to pass is a lot more rigorous than the one quoted in your owner's manual. Ford wouldn't have issued a TSB and back-spec'd MC 5W-20 for all those older motors if they didn't think it was a suitable oil.

Another vote for 5w20 motorcraft.

Use a motorcraft filter on that motor, I have had problems with the drainback valves on other filters with a 4.6L motor.
