oil for my BMW

Hi,
I have a 1998 e36 316 compact with 114.000 km, very good condition. Weather here is very hot summers, very cold winters, I don't drive too crazy, just normal driving, mostly city.
Of course, the question is what oil should I use? My mechnanic (bmw only) suggested the BMW high power special 10w-40 for my car. We are supposed to do the oil chage in a few days, but I was wondering if you think there is a better option.
I don't drive an M3, but sure would like to take care of this engine as best as I can.

Is this the M43TU engine?

Castrol seems to recommend their Edge Sport 0w-40 oil for it. That 0w- would definitely help with your very cold winters.

How often do you change your oil?

Welcome daboni.In mineral, any good 10w40 will be good
to use. If you want to use synthetic, then any high quality
5w40 or like Quattro Pete's suggestion of 0w40 will be perfect.

Mobil 1 0W-40 (great for the cool winters and hot summers here in SC for my 1997 328IC). Not sure if available outside of US.

You have a few great options. I'm running an auto-rx clean in my BMW that's why I am not using one of these right now.

My fav for my BMW? Shell Rotella T6 5W-40, Mobil 1 0W-40 and GC 0W-30

I think you are good with plain 15w40 diesel truck oil changed every 10,000km or so. Have the mechanic check the PCV system to make sure it does not make the oil sludge. You have PCV there, correct?


This oil is good down to about -20c.

Hello daboni! - In the USA, heavy duty engine oils [diesel oils] are very good and comparatively inexpensive.
What is available to you? What oils are readily accessible?
Are you willing to order and have some shipped?
I imagine your costs are high in your country, and that is always a factor.
