Hello all. I just spent the better part of my retirement savings on an 06 Mercedes with the old 5 liter 3 valve V8. I understand Mercedes recommends Mobil 1 0w-40 for use in this motor. (I haven't got the owner's manual yet as the car won't be delivered until next Friday the 19th). Were there any oil related issues with this motor? (ie sludge) From what I have gathered, this was a fairly trouble-free design. I intend to go 10-13k miles between changes. On another note, is Agip oil available in the US? Any opinions? Thanks

Nice choice. There were oil related issues with that engine family on prior year models - the FSS (oil monitoring) system allowed excessive miles before indicating an oil change was due. (In some cases oil service wasn't indicated until well past 20,000 miles.) If your car has no FSS light (it shouldn't if it's a 2006), your stated plan sounds reasonable. For the 2006 model year M-B's current oil and filter change interval is a flat 13,000 miles or one year, whichever comes first, and 10,000 miles or one year for AMG models. ALWAYS use motor oil meeting M-B's latest 229.51 spec and the special "fleece" type oil filter cartridge. Enjoy your new ride.

thanks for the help. I'll go with the yearly oil change using a good synthetic and the fleece filter-they cost around $14. I will probably put less than 10,000 miles per year on the car and store it during winter. I used Agip in the early-mid 1990's and hadn't seen it for awhile. I was watching an F1 race last week and saw a bunch of banners so that peaked my interest. Right now I have 6 cases of the Mobil 1 and 3 cases of RedLine 5w30. I'm as guilty as the rest of hoarding oil. I'll try to use what I have before buying more. (not that I have any cash left!) thanks again for the info
American Agip does indeed market Agip motor oils in the US...do a Gooogle on American Agip and you will find that they have a fully synthetic 5W-40 and 5W-50 for sale at $56.92 per 12 1 Qt cases. You would have to research to see if either of these oils meets MB 229.51 specs. I'm guessing they do not.
I have 2000 E430, I had been using Mobil 1 0W40 for 6 years without any sludge in the engine, with OCI 12-13k miles or 1 year whichever is first. The FSS is very accurate in my car, it was almost alway counted down from 10k miles to zero in about 1 year or 12-13k miles. I am doing oil change myself the last 2 years using Mityvac Evacuator Plus model# 07201. It works very well and very easy without jack up the car.

WOOCHOW, search for my used oil analysis as well as paulv's post and I think you will be reassured. Agree with Ray H about the fleece oil filter if you are going to do a moderately long OCI of 13k miles/1 year. I believe you could use any conventional oil in the right grade for your climate with the Mann or Hengst paper filter if you did 6 month/7.5k mile changes. The synthetic oil and fleece filter are for the long oil change intervals of 1 year or more.
I haven't seen AGIP oils in the US, but if you look on the support our sponsors board, there is an ELF motor oil distributor if you are looking for another continental oil.

I think you need to get your Civic a therapy pet cause it will have a nervious breakdown sitting next to that car.

Considering your driving habits, I imagine you'll be changing the oil once a year. I suggest changing the oil immediately (about one week) before storage.

^ did some more research. the oil they put in was Pentosin "Pentosynth". some german oil. it is MB 229.1 rated.
does anyone know if a 2001 S500 has this engine? a friend of mine just changed his oil, and I think they put in Pennzoil Platinum 5w40 (scribling on receipt said something like "Pento" or "Dento" synthetic 5W40 - figured it must be pennzoil), but I believe PP is only 229.3 and 229.1, not 229.51. do you think this is a big issue?
also, does anyone know how the MB FSS works? friend says it monitors the oil's acidity. somehow I doubt that.
great point Kestas! engines should always be stored with fresh oil. That will be my plan-thanks for the heads-up!
