I mentioned it in the general section for my return, but it is time for the changes in the cars.

Currently, the 4.6L 03 expy and 07 4.0 Mustang are running Iffy Lube bulk Pennzoil conventional and rebranded Fram oil filters. Eek. Coming up on 5k miles for the expy and 4k for the mustang. The new stuff is sitting on the ledge waiting for my dad to do the changes.

Expedition: 7q Motorcraft Semi-Synthetic 5W-20, NAPA Gold Oil Filter

Mustang: 5q Valvoline MaxLife Semi Synthetic 5w30, NAPA Gold Oil Filter

Comments on these? The expedition has 56 1/2 thousand on the clock, the mustang is at 30k.

I'd question the need for a high-mileage oil in a Mustang with only 30k on the clock. You're using regular oil on the Expy, which has almost twice the mileage!

Not that Maxlife is a bad oil, it's just not necessary!

I'd just use 5w30 Motorcraft semi-syn in the Mustang as well!

We were going to use the Motorcraft Semi Synthetic but Advance didn't have it in 5w30. I was at work orientation mom returned it and got the Maxlife. She said it was the closest in price and had Synthetic Blend on it.

I thought so too. We actually bought the 5W-20 and came home. Day before yesterday I popped the hood when I started it (first time in 2 weeks) I was surprised to see the filler cap had 5w30 on it. I must also mention that it had alot of lifter/tappet noise that you can't hear with the hood down. It may have been because it was cold but I bet iffy lube filled it with 5W-20. Maybe it's just because it's cold or it's just that particular 4.0L.

The V8 Mustangs use 5w-20. The 4.0 V6 is one of the last engines Ford still spec's 5w30 for.

Yeah, I've read the 4.0 V-6 is the much older 'German' design engine that needs a 30-weight oil.

Oh yes forgot to mention. The mustang is getting a change now, before we put it away totally for the winter. Mom already withdrew it from use to save on insurance, so it's not leaving the development till she reactivates it. The Expy is her daily driver now.

I wouldnt use a high milage oil in a car as new as your. I also agree with the syn-blen in the OEM spec'd weight. Good filter choice....

the 4.0L v6 is the same that has been in ford rangers since 2001 and ford explorers since about the same time.

it was orginally the 2.8L then 2.9L now its current variant is the 4L. It does require 5w30.

I ran 0w40 and 5w40 M1 in my ranger for almost 70000miles.

was much quieter with the heavier oil.

The engine has no relation to the 3.8L that was in previous mustangs or the 4.2L that were in f150's

The 4.0L V6 has been around for over 20 years... But it's only been in recent years that it's been SOHC. for most of its life it was an OHV pushrod engine. A good engine, but decidedly outdated.

Changes done. Mustang will not be driven till spring. Truck runs great on the Motorcraft oil. I wrote it down, now 3/4 cars are set. I've decided that a 6k mile OCI for our cars is fine. Anyone think that's a bad idea? That will put the truck at 62,700 miles at the next change, the mustang at 36,000, and my cav at 134,000 miles.
