Oil for Ford Inline 6 (4.9 liter)

I would use Pennzoil 5w30 or 10w30 conventional and change it at 3k intervals for 2 or 3 intervals to let that oil clean up some. Then use good quality oil like Pennzoil or Castrol or Valvoline and change it on a good routine schedule for the duration. You can use High mileage oils for the extra add pack they put in them if you like that idea. Hopefully the engine is ok for the long run.

I would agree with this assessment. T6 or Delo synthetic, in the 5w40 flavor. Short OCIs until it cleans itself up, which should not be long. Only thing that killed those motors was severe overheating.......Even then, the big pieces survived.

Yah, the straight 6 is a work horse. Look at the brake lines for rust during your repairs. I had a '62 F 250 with a 223 inch 6 in it. It was a good ol' truck.

So far I have changed oil twice. First oil change was with mobil 5w30 and about 28 oz of MMO. I changed The oil again only 500 miles later and what drained out looked like it had at least 7000 miles on it.

The straight-six was a great engine and I know Ford initially thought about bringing it back after people clamored for it. But there was an issue of fitting it into the newer body styles and it wasn't the greatest on mileage. I'd run any 5/10W-30 in it, but would favor a good high mileage. Mobil 1 High Mileage if you want synthetic...

Why I changed oil in the 1990's, some dimwit brought his in with 40,000 miles on the original oil complete with the factory gray filter. The oil drizzled out with some clumps in it

We notated everything carefully on the invoice for liability purposes and refilled it with Valvoline 10w30. But it made less noise on the new oil leaving than it did coming in. What a tough engine that was

I put 200k plus on a 94 F150. Whatever was on sale at the time of the oil change is what I used. Back then I did 40w in the summer and 30w in the winter.

With that motor it doesn't matter what kind of weight or manufacturer. The motor has to be old, so just get something that will clean it up and do a couple quick oil changes.

The Ford 300 needs oil to run? Seriously though, that was one tough engine. I had a 89 F150 and with nearly 200,000 mi I never had a problem w/ the motor itself. Unfortunately, the ignition system was another story. She ate ignition control modules like candy, and always at the worst possible time. Once on a two lane bridge, another on a -30 deg. night in the middle of no where! Great truck otherwise...

Ok, just to bring this post back....

After reading some about the flat tappet in these engines, do you think the most appropriate choice for oil would be quaker state defy 5w30, just due to the higher zinc content?

Im sure that this engine would run ok with any 5w30, but again due to the engine design I wonder if a high zinc oil like the above would be best for long term wear? After all, weren't the SL rated and previous oils during this motors heyday high zinc? Or do current additive packs do just as well for these engines?

Think so? Owners manual calls for a preferred 5 or 10w30

Seriously? Merk AND yvon in the same topic?!? It's a troll fest!

GASKET BLOWN

Op - I think any oil would do well. Imo, Maxlife 5w30 would be the pick.

In the OPs area, I'd suggest either 10w30 or 5w30.
I recommed ST; cheap and easy to find, and that engine could not care less about brands.

It is one of the more robust engines Ford ever made, along with the 3.0L Vulcan. Typically very long-lived because they made decent (but not outstanding) torque, were moderate in HP (no incentive to rev them high), and great lube systems.

He he. Well, I used a 15w40, but only when it was leaking like mad, until everything was fixed. I wouldn't let a 10w-40 anywhere near the thing - it's an answer to the question no one asked, nor any monogrades.

MaxLife 5w30 did a good job of holding viscosity under fuel dilution, and I don't plan on running odd grades in mine. I've got a shelf full of Quaker State Advanced Durability and Defy in 5w30 that will keep me going for a long time.

I've used 5W30, 10W30, and 10W40 a few times. I'm currently using Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0w30 in mine, I plan to continue using the AFE 0W30. That engine will run with just about anything you throw at it. IMO it was one of the best engines made.

wow.. some people..

5/10w30 if less than 200k miles.. 5/10w40 if more..

no need for high zinc.. no need for special anything.. they'll live forever on whatever you put in it..

funny story 93-96 F-series including the 300 were back spec'd to a 5w20.
