Oil for Focus ST 2.0 Ecoboost

I'm currently running Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 in my car, but on my used oil analysis from my last change at 5k, the oil viscosity had dropped out of spec. The car is tuned and pushing more boost than stock, I don't beat on it, but it does get the throttle pushed hard now and then. From what I understand on here, PP tends to be on the light side of a 30w to start with. I'm wondering what other easily attainable oil you would recommend for me to use? I was looking at M1 and Castrol Edge, not sure if there's a tangible reason to go with one over the other.

If it's tuned and you're not especially worried about sticking to 5w30 API SN, the turbo Subaru crowd generally uses 40-weight oils:

Rotella T6 5w-40
Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5w-40
Mobil 1 0w-40
Castrol 0w-40

WM has all of these in jugs.

Oh, and there's currently a $5/gal mail-in rebate on Rotella T6. Amazon and Wal-Mart have it for $19.57. That's a heck of a deal.

I'm undecided of switching to a 40w. I think it would be helpful overall, but the car only has 8000 miles on it, so still possibly covered by warranty. I have geico mechanical breakdown insurance that I'd count on for an engine failure more than Fords warranty. But if a good 5w30 can handle a 7500 OCI and not shear down I don't see a reason to switch.

I may switch because the odds of a lubrication related failure are minimal overall compared to the other failure possibilities with this engine.

if you are not considering the warranty, go with what is less expensive in
a xW-40 weight synthetic.

The di and timing chain can shear oil so keep the oci short like 5-6000 miles.

Is there any fuel dilution?

There was a small amount in the last OCI, but I didn't get the oil fully warmed up before draining. But fuel dilution isn't' exactly a mystery concept in Ecoboost engines it seems.

Just saw the used oil analysis of this oil and trace fuel for this engine is good.

The extra boost may need a 'thicker' oil with a higher HTHS visc.

What oil temps and pressure did you see with the oci on the used oil analysis
between 1000-5500 miles on engine?

Usually extra boost would cause some blowby, but wear isn't that
bad for such a new engine.

Being in FL just use a 10w30. They are more shear resistant. Probably the most shear resistant grade besides straight weights.

Besides that, I would 2nd the Rotella 5w40. I know tons of people that use it. Lots of turbo Subie guys and Porsche club guys all use Rotella.

I think that's the best way to go, but you might try the heavier or more shear-resistant 30s if you'd prefer.

Red Line 5w or 10w30
Amsoil Series 3000 5w30
Valvoline VR1 Syn 10w30 (the street version)
Castrol 0w-30

Castrol 0w30 is a thick 30 weight oil. Might be a good way to go.

I would second the 0w30 Castrol Edge except that it is hard to find (Amazon being the only place I have found it). Because the 0w-40 is much easier to find and is very close in viscosity (11.78 vs 12.83) it will be up for my next three OCI's on my F150 Eco-Beast and I intend to run at least 7500 miles on it.

I got 5 qt jugs on Amazon for $26.68 shipped to my door.

5w30s dropping out of spec is not unusual, especially on turbo/DI engnes. I'd stick with a 5w30 for warranty reasons, though your tune may have done that in anyway. Your thought about trying an oil that starts out a bit thicker is a good one. I'd try Mobil 1 Extended Performance or Castrol EDGE Extended Performance and see how that goes.

It should also be noted though, that most used oil analysis that show an oil shearing out of grade don't show any particular problem with wear metals. One suspects auto manufacturers know that shearing will occur and consider it to be of no consequence.

Do you live near an Autozone? They stock it, and if they don't happen to have the stock, they can get it.

The nice thing about Autozone is that they sometimes have a sale on Castrol. "Buy 5 quarts at a low price plug get a filter."

At this time I am using Castrol 0w40 in my car.

I can honestly say I have never stepped into an Autozone. That said there is actually one down the street from my work so I will keep an eye out online for Castrol sales.

i would stick with a 5w30 Syn until your warranty is out. Maybe try Mobil 1 5w30.

As someone else said a 10w30 synthetic would likely not shear out of grade as quickly. Being in florida a 10w30 will pump essentially the same anyway.

I have a 14 ST and live in FL as well. Shorten your OCI and stay with 5w30. Send a 4k sample in and see how it looks. Using out of spec oil is asking for warranty trouble. A lot of guys on the ST forum are tuned to stage 3 and still use 5w30.
I use Formula Shell full synthetic that I get at BJ's for $22/6 quarts. Great sleeper oil and add pack is very close to Amsoil OEM.

The 2.3 DI turbo in my 2007 Mazdaspeed 3 is also mildly tuned; up to 69,000 miles I ran a 5,000 mile OCI using Mobil 1 5w30. At 69,000 miles I extended the OCI to 7,500 miles(still using Mobil 1 5w30) and at 115,000 miles I switched to Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30. It has now passed the 151,000 mile mark and my used oil analysis(20 in all) indicate Mobil 1 has performed ver well.

I have Penn Platinum in there now and at 5k it was sheared out of 30w spec on the UOA, so I need (want??) to use something heavier. My wear metals were super low and at the time of the change the car only had 5500 miles on it.

So I need either a heavier 30w or a 40w. I'm not too concerned about warranty on the motor since the odds of lubrication failure are slim. But a heavier 5w30 would work fine for me, I just didn't know what the best option in that area was.
