What grade of oil and brand, can be store brand or name brand would you guys use if you had a well taken care of carb'd truck, van or car? Just curious as in my 78 chevy truck with the 350 in it, I ran Quaker State Conventional 10w30 for years. Thanks in advance

10-30 is a great choice. Combats carb caused fuel dilution to some degree. Quaker State Conventional is a great choice.

Quaker State Defy 10-30 has been doing awesomely in Dad's '81 F150 and his '76 Plymouth van.
Try quaker state defy, it has higher zinc like the 70s oils had.
It makes no difference.
I use a 0W-20 in my carbed Caterham and I have no fuel dilution issues.
I's use a 5w30 in your older Chevy. QS Defy 5w30 would be an option.

Unless you are in a warm climate why would you use a 10w. It makes no sense. And what would having a carb have anything to do with anything.
Drive the truck up to temp and use 5w30. Done deal.
If you insist on using a 10w save it for summer.

Why mess with a good thing. Rotella 10w30 might be something to look at.
Any 10w30 that stays in grade should be just fine. I'd avoid an "Energy Conserving" oil if you get lots of fuel dilution.
I was asking if you had a vehicle that had a carb on it, this isnt for my truck. I meant if you had a vehicle in the 70's or 80's or whenever that had a carb what would be your oil choice. Sorry for the misunderstanding. I am using Quaker State Conventional 5w30 in the truck also.
The truck is fuel injected not carb'd
IMHO, I would, and do use any of todays good 5w30 or 10w30 oils in my '80 Firebird FORMULA V8/4bbl.
Lately(the past several yrs) have been using high mileage oils such as MaxLife 5W30. This year/summer '12, I am using DEFY 5W30.
32 years ago when I bought the car new(as with my other vehicles), I used mostly name brand SE/SF 10W40's. Over the years, I did changed to 10W30's.
And over the last 40+ years, I used mostly 40 wgts in whatever designation/classification meaning...SA/SB/SC/SD(I guess!)...I never paid attention to them back then.
And now, Oh IDK, the past 10+ yrs or so, I've been using 5W30's and as stated above, High Mileage oils lately in 5W30, in this particular V8.
The High Mileage oils have at least slowed down the oil drips and the possible "blowby" that regular 30 & 40 wgts wouldn't touch. And I don't have to "topoff" anymore between OCI's.

Is this an emissions vehicle with a catalytic converter or not? If not, you might want to consider a diesel oil. The Rotella T6 full synthetic 5W40 can be picked up for cheap in a jug. This has great ant-wear properties and cleaning properties which is more important as a carb cannot meter fuel as precisely as fuel injection.

Yeah, I dont have my 78 chevy truck anymore just the 90' 4wd longbed with the 350 fuel injected. Quaker State Conventional works fine in it.

I would have likely done the same thing. If I had such an animal today, it would likely be Defy.

Yeah the defy looks real good. If I had that truck, I probably would have tried the T5 10W30 Rotella though.
