I have a 96 volvo 850 NA 2.4L 5 cylinder with 130,000 miles on it and I live in hot weather and I am not sure if there is another type of oil I should be using that is better. I am now using 5w-30 and it works just fine, but I would like to use the best out there for my car. Please help if you can. Thanks.

If you want the best, go with a top-quality synthetic such as Amsoil, Mobil1, or Redline. M1 0w40 is one of the best as it's ACEA A3 rated.

My friend is currently using GC with 1q M1 15w-50 and topping off with 15w-40 Dello 400. Good results in 1996 Eight-Fiddy with 110,000. Usage is ~1q in 2500 miles, not bad for a hard driver.

You will see lower fuel consumption and a smoother, quieter engine if you switch to xW-40. Possibly even xW-50. Mobil 1 15W-50 would be my choice in FL
I would suggest an oil meeting the ACEA A3 specification. Mobil 1 0W-40 meets some of the most demanding European OEM specs like M/B 229.5 and ACEA A3/B3 and B4. The German Castrol Syntec 0W-30 meets ACEA A3/B3 and B4 and the older M/B 229.3 spec. If you decide to buy the German Castrol Syntec be sure that it says ACEA A3/B3 and B4 on the back of the bottle. Don't buy the old 0W-30 Castrol Syntec 0W-30 that only meets the weak ACEA A1 requirements. In my humble opinion if you want the best oil for any car ignore the API specs and get only oils that meet the latest european specs like ACEA A5/B5 or A3/B3/B4 but don't get an oil that only meets the ACEA A1/B1 or A2/B2 specs as I think they are very similar to the API SL or CF specs.
Other very good choices would be Valvoline Synpower 5W-40, Chevron Synthetic 5W-40, Havoline Synthetic 5W-40, Pennzoil European Formula 5W-40. All the above oil are $5.00 a quart or even less on sale. Amsoil 5W-30 and 10W-40 as well as redline 5W-40 are all great choices but Amsoil and Redline do cost a little more.

I've had good success with Valvoline Synpower 10w-30 in my 1995, 850 Turbo. Here are the results:

The oil did a great job protecting the engine despite fuel dilution. I'd be perfectly content with this oil, except I have the oil addiction bug now and want to try some others
. Bottom line is I don't think you can go wrong with any good synthetic and even some good dino oils like Chevron Supreme.
