Hi,

I live near Vancouver BC and I just got a '14 Mazda3 GT with the 2.5L. Same engine as Mazda 6, CX-5, etc.

Just wondering what is a good oil for this engine?
My trips are usually short (
Owner's manual says 0w-20 but for my first oil change I'm using 5w-20 Amsoil Signature and the EA15K12 filter. It's probably overkill for 5k OCI but I was ordering for everything else at the time so it was convenient.

Looking forward to your advice and comments.

I'm thinking of going with mazda 0w20 with moly or go for the amsoil Signature series 0w20

Good choice except I believe these engines being direct injection still cause a bit of fuel dilution so you'll be draining at lower miles than most. Keep up the same 5k interval but use the Amsoil OE to save some bucks unless you want to do used oil analysis to see how far the SS can make it.

Stick with a 5k interval since you are short tripping a DI motor. Also, does your manual allow for the use of 5w-20? If not, keep 0w-20 in it for warranty.

Amsoil will be expensive for a 5k interval. I would point you toward MGMO, TGMO, PP or M1.

If I had a DI car that called for 0w20 I would also change the oil @5K. For that reason I would use Napa synthetic or QSUD to save some money. Any of these oils, changed at 5K, should make your engine last a long time.

I run PP 0w20 in my 2.5L CX5 and will be doing 6,000 mile OCs using OEM filters. The SkyActiv engines appear to NOT have the fuel dilution problems that other manufactures have. Could be partly due to the piston cavity where the injectors aim. Ed

You can forget about Amsoil, unless your getting at a price comparable to the WM's oils, there is no need for it. Any name brand 0w20 will take your engine very very far if changed at reasonable intervals.

Has the mechanism for why a di engine would have MORE fuel dilution than a port injection been convincingly explained by any engineering white paper?
Given the di car gets much better fuel mileage than a comparable port unit, you would think there would be LESS fuel in the sump - or is this just merely a NEW, unworn-in engine phenomenon only see on this board that would really be common to port engines also?

Makes no sense.

^Yes Pablo, with a preferred customer account, most Amsoil products can be had for much less than regular priced oils at Walmart or Canadian Tire (rip off artists). Mobil 1 (for example) is $12-13 / litre regular price at Canadian Tire. Obviously, sales can bring down the prices.

It's mostly a problem in North America (from what I understand) due to the fact that manufacturers cannot employ the stratified lean burn strategies in DI engines due to different emission requirements and fuel quality in NA compared to Europe. DI engines have been around for a long time in Europe and do not have the severity of issues that NA users might experience.

Thanks for the responses, everyone!

Amsoil OE 0w-20 is $6/qt for members. I will probably stick with that from now on, or at least until the warranty runs out.

Are there any UOA's or VOA's of that oil?

I think the Mazda oil is very good for this engine and OCI. It runs very smooth and didn't burn any off in my engine after 6000km. I would stick with that if it's easy for you to get.

Thanks MikeySoft. Yes I already saw that and was considering getting the dealer to change the oil. But, curiosity got the best of me. BTW, bit of a PITA to change the oil and filter with the undertray trap doors compared to my old Cruze.

TGMO 0w20 is cheaper, readily available at Toyota or Lexus dealers, perfect for short trips due to its specs...
KV40 of 36 and VI of 216 and awesome add pack... Check out the posts and VOA's.
Until the new Mazda with moly is available in Canada I wouldn't run anything else, you shouldn't either!!! (Joking)

I'm taking no chances with mine. MGMO and OEM filter for me. 5000 mile OCI should work out just fine, I will be able to do oil analysis sometime later this year.

I have heard that Eneos 0W-20 has moly in it as well and should be a perfectly good substitute.

I called Wolfe Langley Mazda couple months ago and i think they do have the mazda 0w20 with moly.. i think it was like $6 something per bottle.. I was surprised that it was priced pretty good..TGMO 0w20 at a local lexus/toyota dealership is around $6-7 per bottle..
