I'm trying to help a neighbor who inherited a 2014 Jeep Compass (2.4L) from her mother. She said the oil indicator/computer is telling her to change her oil. The car has 8000 miles on it and this may be its first oil change. I looked through the owners manual and there's no mention as to what type of oil to use (conventional, blend , synthetic, etc.). The manual does state to use "Chrysler material standard 6395" and the oil cap specifies 5w20. I have two 5 quart jugs of Motorcraft 5w20 synthetic blend oil I no longer need. She wants to learn how to do oil changes herself to save some money and I agreed to help her. Is there any downside to using the Motorcraft syn blend I have in this vehicle?

She might want to find out if the dealer her mother bought it at provided a free service package. Otherwise, for the sake of warranty, I would have her buy the oil and filter so she has a receipt to document the change.

Many 5w-20's meet 6395, the two quarts of MC would be fine but you'll obviously be mixing with something since two quarts isn't enough for an OC..
You can use either 5W20 or 5w30 it's somewhere in the owners manual. Pennzoil is Jeep's factory fill. Pennzoil conventional, Pennzoil Platinum and Pennzoil Ultra meet the MS6395 spec. Mobil super meets the spec as well. If you go to the Mobil website they also show 5W20 or 5W30 can be used.
I don't see using the oil you have as a problem, but I would stick to a spec oil after you use that up.

OP has two five (5) quart jugs; more than enough for an OC.

As an FYI, when you fill the sump with the factory spec 4.5 quarts, the dipstick level will read right in the middle of the hash marks. Resist the urge to add another half quart to bring it up to the full line.

That little Chrysler motor will run on almost anything and do fine. I had one in a company car that only saw Iffy Lube 5w20, I take care of another that has only seen a 50/50 of 5w20 and 15w40. The company car had over 100k when the lease was done. The one I service has 150k, and still ticking along.\

As stated, have her check to see if it's covered by dealer oil changes?

The 6395 oil spec 5w20 has been standard fare for much of the Chrysler/Jeep line for years now. I know I've run various 5w20s in my Pentastar that didn't list the 6395 spec, but I generally change it at 7-8K miles. If I waited for the OLM, it would be closer to 10K miles.
FWIW, those 2.4Ls are tough little motors. TONS of them around.
