Oil for 2004 Murano

Hey everybody, I've done a lot of searching around, but I need a recommendation. My wife's 3.5L Murano has 90000 miles on it right now. I switched to synthetic at 70000 when I saw royal purple was selling for $3 a quart on clearance. It burned a quart of RP in 5000. I changed the oil at 80000 to SynPower. It burned a quart of that at 85000. This time I changed the oil with SynPower again at 87500. I just added a quart since my last oil change.

This is our main vehicle which gets driven about 200 miles a week.

My question is, it's obviously not leaking any oil whatsoever, so should I switch back to possibly a blend like valvoline maxlife or just go back to conventional and go back to 3000 mile OCI's.

Welcome to the forum! Is that the same V6 that is in my wifes G35X Sedan? The VQ something or another? If it is I have only found 1 synthetic that hers does not use a drop of. I got a good deal once on Kendall GT-1 full synthetic (kendall is very good oil btw) so i used it in her car. The oil stayed clean looking and didnt burn any at all in 7500 miles. It burned AMSOIL Signature Series about 1 quart every 5000 and the same with mobil 1. I figure its worth a try because it certainly wont hurt anything and it is a fairly inexpensive synthetic oil and good quality on top of it. Ishould add that her car now has 111,000 miles on it.

I created this thread almost a year ago and still have the same issues. I know the VQ35 is really tough on oil. I've done plenty of research on this site...

I never thought I would care so much about oil, but that's BITOG's fault!

Now the Murano has 103000 miles on it, I've gone through two OCI's since last yaer. The first was Mobil 1 High Mileage 5w30. It burned a quart of Mobil 1 every 2000 miles. Now I'm using Pennzoil Ultra 5w30 with a little MMO. I'm only 1500 miles into the Ultra and I've already put in a quart extra. I'm thinking it's too thin and this engine is just eating it up.

From all my research I think that I should just step up to a 5W-40. I plan on using Rotella T6 with a Wix filter in my next oil change. After all the used oil analysis I've seen, I think it will give my VQ35 a good match.

Any comments/advice are welcome.

T6 would do it well. Ideally, since your in a northern climate, you could run T6 in summer and a 5w30 in winter. GC or Mobil 1 0w-40 could also be a good choice for year round running.

Not sure I can help but we have an 05 and have used Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 since new. I use maybe 1/3 qt between 7000 mile changes. So maybe you are loosing oil somewhere?

There's no doubt the vehicle is burning oil. It has never leaked a drop of oil. That's why I am planning on stepping up to a 5W-40 like Rotella T6.

If you are using MMO with the 5W30, it is thinned out...

I'd try Valvoline Maxlife full synthetic 5w30.

Put something thicker in it... I would tend to go for GC or something. I used GC in my VQ's and they ran excellent on it.

There is a thread here, guys were talking about a maxima with the VQ35 and they said after about 85k and your engine starts eating oil to move up to thicker oil.

No idea if it works but should be easy to try.

I am unsure if this crossed over the the VQ in the Murano but the VQs in the early Z/Gs had some oil consumption issues. Some said a thicker oil helped but the end result were new motors.
