Oil for 2004 Audi A4 1.8T Q

Hey folks, I was wondering what's the best Oil for my car?

1. 2004 Audi A4 1.8TQ
2. VW502 5w40 / 5W30 ? For some reason the last owner lost the manual.
3. I'm from BC Canada
4. I drive easy 90% of the time.
5. I drive 50% highway 50% city
6. My car previously had a coolant leak through the flange and its leaking oil through the seals but I just need new o rings.

I have been using Lubro moly 5w40 synthoil but now I'm only able to get the Liqui Moly in the same type. What is the difference?


Is there another one I should be using instead? I looked at Pennzoil Platinum but I can't find any Euro ones locally. I don't mind buying online if they ship to Canada without costing an arm and a leg.

Lubro Moly changed their name to Liqui Moly, so odds are that the 5w40 oil you are getting is the same as what you got in the past. If the specifications listed on the container are the same, you have nothing to worry about. There are a few 5w30 oils that meet VW specs, but typically they meet VW 504/507, and those are not always ideal for older VW engines, plus they are extremely expensive.

You are lucky that coolant only leaked from O-rings. I am used to seeing those parts crack open.

There are many options here.
I see no problem in continuing to use the Lubro Moly.
However if you want to switch:
Castrol Edge (Syntec) 0w-40 Euro would be my choice, but I'm sure there will be many Mobil 1 0w-40 suggestions from others. Either one would do fine, but I'd go with the Castrol, as many Audi dealerships use it.

In Canada, the Syntec 0w-40 is probably the most economical choice, if one is looking for the specified oil. Mobil 1 0w-40 doesn't come in jugs up here, nor does GC 0w-30, while the 0w-40 Castrol does. I have also seen Castrol 0w-40 on sale at the same price as things like the Syntec 5w30 when its on special.

Aren't some of the 1.8T's know for sludge issues? I don't know what years were most affected, but it'd be worth doing some research about it and planning your OCIs accordingly.

I believe so, I've read it in a few places. What are my best chances to avoid this from happening? More frequent OCI's or a better engine oil?


How does Liqui Moly rank amongst other engine oils for my car?
