Oil For 1994 Jag XJS

Picking up my new (to me) 1994 Jaguar XJS got delayed until Tuesday. I'm planning on doing an oil change and looking things over soon after getting it. Don't have the manual yet so I don't know what is recommended. What oil would you guys recommend?

I would guess that any A3 oil would be suitable to the Jag.
Which engine?
The SOHC V-12, or the later six?
I would bet that some ridiculously heavy stuff was recommended originally, but I would bet that any A3 would work well.

Anyway, you have the six.
Any A3 oil should do well in this application.
There are some 30 grades that meet A3, like GC, and many 40s.
I'd lean toward something inexpensive meeting A3, like Maxlife or Durablend 10W-40, until you figure out how much oil consumption the beast exhibits.
If consumption is low, you migh then try GC or Mobil 1 0W-40.

Yeah, thought I put the engine but I guess I forgot - d'oh. It's the 4.0 liter AJ6 straight six.

Since I don't have a total maintenance history or know what kind of oil has been used I'm thinking I should do a shorter OCI with a good cleaning oil - correct? I'm still new to all this so tips would be appreciated.

Use a high mileage formula dino and a short interval until you know the car.

May want to pull the cam cover and take a peek at the varnish/sludge level. For some reason these cars seem to sit around a lot.

Remember seeing a thread lately where redline did a really good cleaning job on (IIRC) an Explorer. Would it be worth giving it a go in 0w40.

I plan on doing 6 month OCI's (unless recommended otherwise).

5W-40 or 0W-40 preferred. The naturally aspirated AJ6/AJ16 engine (your XJS) also was backspec'd to allow synthetic 0w30 oils. The supercharged AJ16 engine (my XJR) is limited to 40 weights.

The later AJ26/27 V8 engines are all spec'd for 0W-30/5w30.

Filters: Wix/NAPA 51231/1231, Mann W930/13, or Mahle

A good product for these engines is a 15w40 (mixed fleet) HDEO - the brand matters little

No real need for a synthetic but a 15W-50 synthetic would do the job too - at greater cost considering the around 8ltr sump - and few benefits
