Hi, I recently purchased a 93 BMW with high miles (218,000) and want to know which oil is best. Thanks for the input.

I'll beat everyone to it - its a BMW, run GC! They all do!

Seriously, you might want to look into a HM oil if you have any consumption/leaks....if you are looking at running synthetic, M1 HM 10W-40 seems to get good reviews here, might be a place to start....

I run rotella syn 5w-40 and recently have changed to schaeffer's 9000 5w-40 with great success.

Id use either with confidence.

With that many miles, I would stick with a non-synthetic to keep drinking/leaks down. We have a `93 325is in our family with 180k miles and run Chevron Delo 15w40 at 5k intervals. BMW actually recommends 15w40's for their older cars and you can buy BMW (aka Castrol) 15w40 bottled oil at the dealership.

I run GC 0W-30 in my 1995 BMW 325iC...work perfectly, IMHO.

I'd also consider:

-Redline 5W-40 or 10W-40,
-Eneos 5W-40,
-Elf 0W-30,
-Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5W-40 [Delvac 1],
-Valvoline Synpower 5W-40,
-Castrol Syntec 5W-40,
-Shell Rotella Synthetic 5W-40,
=Amsoil 5W-40

GC is an acronym for German Castrol. There's a FAQ on it in the European and Import Motor Oils forum.

pre-2001 BMW's use 5W-40 (BMW LL-98). imo, GC would be a bit too thin for a Kali summer or a +200k mile engine.
