My neighbor bought my old drag SBC 12:1, Crane 292 heads, GK .569 .585 cam with triple valve springs(BBC). He runs the 8 qt. oil pan 1 1/2 qt's low and he puts around 4000 miles a year on it. He runs Mobil 1 High Mileage 10w40 with a can and a half of MOS2

He changes the oil once a year and that engine still runs great all the way to red line(7800 rpm).

I was impressed by the MOS2 so I use it in my S2000.

Been there, done that - won't usually work

Most of the aftermarket ZDDP additives end up fighting the built-in add paks from the refiners. The end product is usually less well suited to the task than the straight oil ...

I have about 20 bottles of ZDDP + from when I used to blend my own for competition engines. But since API SM, it has been a down hill situation.

When the refiners dropped their built-in ZDDP levels, they compensated with other additives which, in some cases, give better results... All of this is one reason oil prices went up. Cheap additives were replaced by slightly more expensive alternatives ...

And Chevron Supreme is pretty good oil. In many cases better than boutique oils ...

Here is an article by Hot Rod Magazine endorsed by Comp Cams on flat tappet lube requirements.

Here is a list of specs on HDEOs, notice the ZDDP levels are very close to the 1200 ppm cited in the HRM article.

An easy and low-cost way to relieve a little pressure on the tappet to cam interface is to in install roller rockers. It helps a little as the fulcrum of the rocker is no longer a sliding ball and cup but a roller bearing. The roller tip at the valve stem interface will also alleviate some frictional load when actuating the valve.

8 years ago I built a claimer (low-cost) style engine, specifically a de-storked 400 to arrive at 377ci for my uncle's '63 Nova/Chevy II. It still has the original Elgin E-917 solid tappet cam with .512/.536 lift at the valve with generic "Z/28" valve springs and budget Erson 1.5 roller rockers. Very low-tech. His car is driven 30 miles to the dragstrip and will click off 11.70s to 11.90s all night.

He owns a trucking company so for lube the car get whatever bulk 15w40 HDEO is the garage. Climate is warm though, San Antonio, TX. The car does a lot of cruise nights/hotrod meets, so it does get driven.

Not if the springs are original, LOL!

They'd have been stiff in 1970, not so much now
