I am just about to change the oil in my '09 honda CR-V for the first time.
What would be the best oil for my CR-V? and also filter?

thanks

Any dino 5w20 should be fine, such as Pennzoil, Castrol GTX, Havoline, or Motorcraft. I'd use the factory filter, personally.

Can you get the Pennzoil Platinum 15 dollar rebate in Canada?

If so, I would say that would be the best. Otherwise whatever you can get cheap in a 5w-20 synthetic whether it be PP, M1, SynPower or other. I'd go synthetic for the added protection/faster flow in winter, but Honda does like them some long drains... I'm assuming you're running the full length of the Maintenance Minder system.

Filter, I like the PureOne PL14610, but again not sure what brands you have available in Canada. Some of the OEM Honda filters are rebranded Frams... no thanks. If you're getting a Filtech or Toyo Roki then we'll talk.

Welcome to the Board!Honda's are easy on oil! Any SM 5W20 oil, take your pick it really doesn't matter! I personally use PP, PYB, Q torque in my Honda's. Brand really doesn't matter, you have a favorite? Use it! Change by the MM when it gets to 15%, and the filter every other OCI. The filter i would use the OEM or Wix, Napa Gold, Purolator, or even Walmart ST filters, your choice. As long as you perform the maintenance on that rig it will last you a long time!

I prefer to use the dino stuff, i'm hearing a lot of good about the pureOne from purolator. The MM currently is at 30%, not sure how low i should let it go.

Let it go to 15% before changing the FF...my wifes Accord (almost same engine as your CRV) was at 7100 miles when it hit 15%. I'm running Castrol GTX 5w20 (dino) in the Accord....it's a thicker 20 weight. I'm also using PL14610 filters.

Well, first you said best and then you said dino. I won't go into that. There are plenty of good dinos, and unless you're towing I wouldn't be too worried about running them the full MM, but I wouldn't go longer.

If it were me and I didn't have a stash of bought-with-rebates-synthetic, I'd probably be using PYB or Mobil Clean 5000 in 5w-20.

If you can get the PureOnes, they're a good filter. Honda recommends every other oil change (probably because it's located at such a horrible position) but I (and most people) still do it every. I cut mine open, I have never seen anything that would make me think it couln't go for two, but I'm set in my ways.

Actually the k24 in my Accord and the OP's CRV has a vertical oil filter right next to the oil pan plug. The pre 08 k24s had the horizontal oil filter way up above the axle.

YES! All 3 of my Honda's have the filter changed every other OCI! Read your owners manual thats what it states. When the MM goes off it will give you a letter & a # for the service required very simple to follow in the owners manual.

Great choice in vehicle! You can run any ILSAC GF4 5w20 with no worries. Proven track record with the Honda OLM tested against UOA's that prove the Honda is not using the oil up before the OLM goes off.

So, to summarize, it's recommended the OP use "any dino" (x3), PP (x3), PYB (x3), M1, Valvoline Syn, Mobil 5000, Motorcraft (x2), Quaker State Q or Castrol GTX with a Wix, PureOne, or OEM filter (x2).

Wonder what he'll decide.

Honda engines can practically run on vegetable oil.

I'd use a cheap SM dino oil and change it according to the MM.

I don't know whether to be happy Honda finally wised up to this, or [censored] I didn't buy an 09 when I bought my 06 used!
