I have some STP brand oil filters that a frend of mine gave me 20 years ago when he sold his Jiffy Lube shop. I have been using them and I want to know if they're still OK to use?

Why not, as long as you see no rust in them.

If they are that old, they well be the pre-Champion Lee filters that wound up being Champion, K&N, Mobil, and some others these days.

If I recall they had a conventional pleated cellulose inner filter with a wrap of larger particle material around them, and were called "STP double filters" or something along those lines.

Cut one open after use and before, it would be cool to see a 20 year old STP filter.

Honest question b/c I don't know. Is it possible that the filter media dried out and became brittle or fragile?

The rubber could have dried up and cracked but I do not think the media could go bad.

I would cut a used one open and see how it looks inside before using another. Be interesting to compare how much media as compared to modern filters.

+1, if for no other reason than to check the nitril ADV. My guess is that you will find a wonderfully built filter.

Been in the Auto Parts business now 32 years. I don't see any problem using these oil filters 20 years old or not. If stored properly they are good to go. Even small dents will be no problem. Once you start up your engine most dents will disappear on the oil filter as they pop back out due to the oil pressure.
