Oil Filter thread M18 x 1.5 vs. 3/4 x 16

My Toyota and Chrysler vehicle use oil filters with a thread of 3/4 X 16. My GM uses the M18 x 1.5 which doesn't give me as many options so I wonder if these are interchangeable?

I looked up a thread pitch chart and they seem very close. I think the 16 is the threads per inch and the 1.5 is the thread pitch so that doesn't seem to be the same thing. This is only based on reading about threads so I may be wrong. Has anyone tried installing one in place of the other?

I know there are other factors in oil filter specs besides the mounting (like bypass pressure, drainback, etc.) but on my old cars this is primarily what I am looking for.

It would be simplier to just keep a few of one filter on the shelf to use for any of the cars as needed.

Isn't this how some quickie lubie places end up with filters blowing off customer's cars?

Don't do it. Maybe can get a new mounting stud with different thread for one or the other car though.

The 16 and the 1.5 are thread counts, not the same.

16 is 1/16 inch which = 1.5875mm, close enough to 1.5mm to be a potential problem.

Thanks for all the quick responses. Looks like I will stay with the M18 x 1.5 on the GM 3.4L which means the only filter I have been able to find locally is the tiny PH3387a.

There should be something bigger with that thread size. Just need to look it up in the Wix catalog. May be able to find out from their website, but the paper catalog listings would be best.

The Fram PH3980/Wix 1036/AC Delco PF-52 has the same thread as the 3387A and it's a bit larger...

Or Purolator L24011, too.

Usually. My niece's Montana minivan ended up sitting in the garage with no filter while I ran back to the store to get the proper filter. The one listed in the Fram catalog for her vehicle wasn't the correct one. Glad I don't live in Wyoming or someplace where the parts store is 100 miles away.

'Course, Wyoming'ans (Wyoming'ites?) are probably smarter than me, and double-check everything.

Wix 51036

Option II: run two filters per OCI, changing out the first one about half way through. That is only if you think it is getting filled with crud though. There are others. I'll look in my paper catalog when I get a chance. Maybe tonight.

Ummm, that looks like a Fram number. If it is then you have worse problems than filter size.

No, seriously, fram will work, but not the greatest filter. I would go with a Wix or Purolator (Wix preferred).

Found a filter that is exact same as yours, but differnt BETA and 40% longer (1.4 inches longer). BETA should not be an issue, make sure length will not hit something when engine moves under torque.

Am I missing something, didn't I already suggest this?

Yes and MGregoir wasn't the only one who failed to read your post.
