Oil filter stuck??

I tend to keep trying..couple weeks ago it was welded on..oh i got it off..but my palm on my right hand swelled up for the next couple days LOL.

I have had a very large pair of channel lock pliers for 35 years. They have come in handy for a few jobs over the years and one job they never fail is to loosen any stuck oil filter. The jaw grip doesn't slip and the torque they generate even at almost 90 degree angle is enough to loosen any overtightened oil filter.

Pfft, if it were me, I make a mess on a good day, so if a filter is stuck on, I expect a mess. If the can doesn't have to be punctured and there isn't a pool of oil on the ground when you're done, that means the filter wasn't that tight in the first place.

Pfft, if it were me, I make a mess on a good day, so if a filter is stuck on, I expect a mess. If the can doesn't have to be punctured and there isn't a pool of oil on the ground when you're done, that means the filter wasn't that tight in the first place.

I had the same issue this past weekend. I always change my own and I was shocked when I couldn't twist it off. It is impossible to put a wrench on the filter of my Subaru. I grabbed some sandpaper and it came off easy peazy.

Place a latex or nitrile glove section over the end of the filter and tap the end wrench in place with a mallet.
I have large set of Channel-locks that I've had to resort to once or twice. The can bends a bit when you grab it with these, but once you have purchase you can get it to turn. They could be hard to fit in some applications:

I've never gotten desperate enough to do the screwdriver puncture.

Cap wrenches SUCK. Get a good ole' oil filter band wrench.

They work VERY well if there is clearance on all sides of the filter.
For my Ford trucks I can't use plier type filter removal tools. The oil filters are buried deep in the suspension. I got a KD tool that slips over the filter and uses a ratchet to loosen it. I'm going to coat the KD tool in a rubber coating to help with the grip.

There is no room for the tools with handles like pliers. My cap wrench slips over the flutes. My strap wrench slips also. I have a universal cam type wrench but it's too big for the tiny RAV4 oil filter. I'll try the sand paper and the nitrile glove methods this weekend. Thanks for all your suggestions. If nothing works, I go back to the gorilla (for the last time).

What you need is a small wrench specifically designed to remove a filter down to 2-1/2" diameter and up to 3-1/8". This is the one I got:
My local Pep Boys shows it in stock for $7.99. I bought mine at AutoZone for $5.99. Lisle has a similar one that costs more. It literally jams itself into four points on the sides near the top of a filter. If you can fit a cap wrench then you can probably fit one of these things. I like this kind better than a band wrench. I managed to get off the narrow 2.69" diameter filter on a Nissan Rogue, and it came off pretty easily once those jaws sunk into the top of the filter can. I guess if you're really having a hard time you can use one of these things with a breaker bar.

Put a rag in your cap wrench and shove it on. Better grip, I do it quite a bit as some of my cap wrenches are not the best fit for my various applications.

Just as a general comment, anyone deal with certain AC filters like the PF47 or PF52? Most of them had these deep concave flutes. I remember I had a FloTool composite cap wrench that worked really well on this filter, unless it was the version made in England with flat-sided flutes.
